Holding the World Together: A Short History of Glue

Long before there were words for it, people were sticking things together. The oldest known adhesive is a lump of birch-bark tar recovered from a site in central Italy, produced by Neanderthals perhaps 200,000 years ago and still bearing the fingerprints of its maker. Making the tar was no simple matter: birch bark had to be heated in the absence of air, a controlled process that hints at considerable skill. The sticky black substance was used to fix sharpened stones to wooden handles, turning a blade into a spear or an axe. For hunter-gatherers, a joint that held under stress was not a convenience but a matter of survival, and the recipe for a reliable glue was knowledge worth guarding.

As settled societies emerged, glue-making drew on a wider range of materials, most of them from animals. Boiling the hides, bones and sinews of cattle releases collagen, which sets into a firm, water-soluble adhesive as it cools. Egyptian craftsmen were using such glues more than three thousand years ago to assemble furniture and to lay the thin sheets of veneer that decorated the tombs of the wealthy. Fish, too, yielded a prized glue from their swim bladders, valued for its clarity. These animal glues remained the mainstay of carpenters, bookbinders and instrument makers well into the nineteenth century, and a few specialists still prefer them today because a joint made with them can be gently reheated and taken apart for repair.

Plants offered a second family of natural adhesives. Pine resin, sometimes mixed with beeswax and powdered charcoal to make a putty, sealed the seams of ships and pottery; natural rubber, tapped from tropical trees, was known in the Americas long before Europeans arrived. Yet all these substances shared awkward limitations. Animal glues soften in damp conditions and lose their grip in heat; many plant resins turn brittle with age and crack. A joint might hold for years in a dry room and then fail on a humid day. Until the twentieth century, no glue was both strong and genuinely resistant to water, and this single weakness placed a ceiling on what could be built and where it could be used.

The breakthrough came from the laboratory rather than the workshop. In 1907 the Belgian-born chemist Leo Baekeland created Bakelite, the first fully synthetic plastic, by reacting two simple chemicals under heat and pressure. The same class of reactions soon yielded adhesives that hardened permanently and shrugged off both water and heat. During the Second World War, synthetic resins bonded the plywood airframes of aircraft, a task no animal glue could have survived. The decades that followed brought a stream of new products: the epoxies, the fast-setting 'super glues' discovered by accident, and the pressure-sensitive adhesives that coat sticky tape. For the first time, glue could be engineered for a specific job rather than simply gathered and boiled.

Why does a glue stick at all? Two mechanisms are at work, and most adhesives rely on both. The first is mechanical: a liquid glue flows into the tiny pits and pores on a surface and, once hardened, grips them like countless microscopic hooks. This is why roughening a surface with sandpaper often improves a bond. The second is chemical: attractions form between the molecules of the adhesive and those of the material beneath, sometimes as weak forces between molecules, sometimes as true chemical bonds. A good glue must first wet the surface thoroughly, spreading into intimate contact before it sets; a drop that beads up and refuses to spread will never hold. Cleanliness matters for the same reason, since a film of grease keeps the adhesive from ever touching the surface it is meant to seize.

Curiously, the most promising ideas in modern adhesives come from looking back at nature. The gecko runs up glass using feet covered in millions of tiny hairs, each too small to see, that cling through molecular attraction alone and leave no residue; engineers have begun to copy this design to make dry, reusable grips. The mussel, meanwhile, anchors itself to wet rock with proteins that set underwater — precisely the condition that defeats most conventional glues — and medical researchers hope to adapt them into surgical adhesives that could one day replace stitches. After a hundred years of synthetic chemistry, the search for the perfect glue has, in a sense, returned to where it began: watching how living things solve the problem.

Letting Go: The Promise and Perils of Rewilding

Rewilding is a young word for an old impulse: the wish to let nature take charge of itself. Where traditional conservation tends to freeze a landscape in a chosen state — mowing a meadow, coppicing a wood, holding back the scrub to protect a rare flower — rewilding aims at the opposite. Its supporters want to restore the natural processes that once shaped whole ecosystems and then step back, allowing the land to find its own balance without constant human management. Central to the idea is the return of missing species, especially the large animals whose grazing, digging and hunting once did the work that conservationists now do by hand. The goal is not a garden tended to a fixed design but a wilder, less predictable place that largely looks after itself.

The example most often cited is the return of wolves to Yellowstone National Park in the United States in 1995, after an absence of some seventy years. With a top predator restored, the park's elk could no longer graze the riverbanks unchecked; willow and aspen recovered where the elk now feared to linger, birds and beavers returned to the regrown thickets, and the beavers' dams reshaped the streams themselves. Ecologists call such a chain of effects, spreading downward from a predator, a 'trophic cascade'. The Yellowstone story has been told so often that it has become a kind of parable for rewilding — though some researchers caution that its effects have been overstated, and that other factors, such as changing weather and elk numbers, played their part alongside the wolves.

Europe has pursued a different version of the idea. With few true wildernesses left, projects there have often worked with what remains, reintroducing large grazing animals to open, semi-natural landscapes. At Knepp, a former farm in southern England, free-roaming cattle, ponies and pigs now stand in for the wild oxen and horses of the distant past, and land once ploughed for crops has given way to a mosaic of scrub, grassland and young trees teeming with insects and birds. Elsewhere, conservationists have argued for the return of beavers, whose dams reduce flooding downstream, and even, more controversially, for predators such as the lynx. The unifying belief is that large animals are not passengers in an ecosystem but engineers of it.

Part of the appeal of rewilding is economic as much as ecological. Intensive land management is expensive and never-ending; a rewilded landscape, its champions argue, can eventually sustain itself and even pay its way through tourism, as visitors come to see beavers or hear wolves. There is a deeper, less measurable attraction too. In an age uneasy about its effect on the planet, the idea of deliberately giving ground back to nature — of admitting that not every acre must be controlled — carries a strong moral and emotional charge. For many supporters, rewilding is as much about changing the human relationship with the natural world as it is about any particular species.

Yet rewilding has drawn sharp criticism, and not only from those with land to lose. One controversy concerns animal welfare. At Oostvaardersplassen, a celebrated Dutch reserve, herds of introduced grazers were left to fend for themselves in the belief that nature should take its course. When the population outgrew the food available, thousands of animals starved during hard winters, and the resulting public outcry forced managers to begin culling and feeding — the very interventions rewilding was meant to escape. Critics seized on the episode as evidence that a policy of stepping back can shade into neglect, and that on a small, fenced reserve, hemmed in by roads and farmland, the 'natural' processes rewilding relies upon cannot truly operate.

A second objection is more philosophical. If the aim is to restore an ecosystem to its natural state, which past state should be the target? The landscape before modern farming, before the first settlers, or before the last ice age, when Europe was home to elephants and rhinoceroses? There is no single 'natural' baseline to return to, critics argue, and the choice of one is inevitably a human judgement dressed up as a return to nature. Rural communities raise a blunter concern. Farmers whose families have worked the same hills for generations often see rewilding as a threat to a living landscape and a way of life, and resent being told that their fields would be better off abandoned to scrub.

Faced with these criticisms, many practitioners have grown more modest in their claims. Few now speak of returning to a pristine wilderness; more talk of restoring particular functions — a predator here, a wetland there — while accepting that people will remain part of the picture. Rewilding, in this pragmatic form, becomes less a retreat from management than a different kind of it, one that works with natural processes rather than against them and measures success over decades rather than seasons. Whether that patient, uncertain approach can be reconciled with the pressures of a crowded continent is the question on which the movement's future is likely to turn.

In the Zone: Flow, Effort and the Making of an Expert

Ask people to describe the moments when they felt most alive, and a surprising number will not mention rest or pleasure but effort — the rock climber halfway up a cliff, the musician lost in a difficult passage, the surgeon absorbed in a long operation. The psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi spent decades collecting such accounts and found in them a common shape, which he called 'flow'. In this state, attention narrows to the task at hand, the sense of time distorts, and self-consciousness falls away; action and awareness seem to merge, and the activity comes to feel worth doing entirely for its own sake. What struck Csikszentmihalyi was that people reported these experiences not while relaxing but while stretched to the limit of their abilities. Enjoyment, it seemed, lay not in ease but in the full and voluntary use of one's capacities.

Flow does not arrive at random. It depends, above all, on a delicate balance between the difficulty of a task and the skill of the person attempting it. Too easy, and the mind wanders into boredom; too hard, and it collapses into anxiety. Only when challenge and ability are both high, and roughly matched, does the door to flow open. Two further conditions help. The goal must be clear, so that attention is not wasted on deciding what to do next, and feedback must be immediate, so that each move can be adjusted at once. A climber knows instantly whether a handhold has held; a chess player sees at once how the board has changed. Activities that supply this steady stream of information, Csikszentmihalyi argued, are especially likely to draw a person into flow.

Here lies a paradox at the heart of the idea. Flow feels effortless — that is much of its charm — and yet it can only be reached by those who have already invested enormous effort in acquiring a skill. The pianist who seems to play without thinking has spent thousands of hours making that fluency possible; the ease is earned, not given. Csikszentmihalyi described flow activities as 'autotelic', a term built from Greek roots meaning that the goal is contained within the activity itself rather than in any external reward. The point of the climb is the climbing. This helps explain why flow resists being bought or hurried: it is a by-product of engagement, not a prize that can be pursued directly, and the harder one grasps at it, the more surely it retreats.

If flow is the reward of skill, how is skill itself acquired? The most influential answer comes from the psychologist Anders Ericsson, whose studies of violinists, chess masters and athletes led him to argue that expertise is built less by raw talent than by a particular kind of training he called 'deliberate practice'. This is not the comfortable repetition of what one can already do, but a demanding, focused effort at the edge of one's competence, aimed squarely at weaknesses and guided by constant correction. Crucially, deliberate practice is often the opposite of flow: it is effortful, sometimes unpleasant, and requires the very self-monitoring that flow dissolves. The expert, on this account, must spend long hours in a state of strain precisely so that, in performance, the strain can disappear.

What changes inside the mind as expertise grows? Part of the answer is that skilled performers stop attending to details that beginners must labour over. A learner driver thinks consciously about every gear change; an experienced one does it without noticing, freeing attention for the road ahead. Psychologists call this automaticity. Experts also perceive their field differently, grouping what novices see as scattered elements into meaningful patterns — a process known as 'chunking'. A chess master glancing at a board does not see thirty-two separate pieces but a handful of familiar situations, which is why masters can reproduce a real game position at a glance yet do no better than novices when the pieces are scattered at random. Their advantage lies not in memory in general but in the patterns their experience has taught them to recognise.

This very automaticity, however, carries a hidden cost, and it is here that the accounts of flow and of expertise pull against each other. Once a skill runs by itself, it becomes hard to change, and errors quietly baked into it can persist for years unnoticed. A performer content to stay in flow, repeating what already feels smooth, may stop improving altogether — a plateau that Ericsson observed even among professionals. To keep advancing, the expert must periodically break the spell, dragging a buried, automatic skill back into conscious awareness in order to inspect and rebuild it. Some psychologists therefore warn against treating flow as an unqualified good. The effortless absorption that makes an activity so satisfying is, they suggest, precisely the state in which no learning takes place.

Which leaves an unresolved question about what flow is ultimately for. To Csikszentmihalyi, it was close to the secret of a life well lived: a person who could find flow in work, in relationships, even in solitude, need not depend on external circumstances for contentment. Others are more wary. They note that the state is morally neutral — a forger and a violinist may know it equally — and that a culture obsessed with optimal experience risks mistaking absorption for meaning, as though the quality of an activity were merely a matter of how completely it swallows our attention. Employers, meanwhile, have grown interested in engineering flow in the workplace, a prospect that strikes critics as the latest attempt to extract more from workers under the flattering language of fulfilment. Whether flow is a path to freedom or one more thing to be managed may depend less on the state itself than on who is arranging the conditions for it.
