Cities Built by Grains: The Life and Peril of Coral Reefs
A coral reef has the solidity of stone, yet it is the work of animals scarcely larger than a grain of rice. Each coral polyp, a soft-bodied cousin of the sea anemone, extracts calcium and carbonate dissolved in seawater and deposits them as a hard skeleton beneath its body. One generation settles and builds upon the skeletons of those before it, so that a formation large enough to be seen from space is the patient accumulation of countless tiny creatures across thousands of years. The polyps, however, do not manage alone. Within their tissues live microscopic algae, and host and lodger are bound in an exchange that rewards them both: the algae capture sunlight and hand over sugars, while the polyp offers shelter and the compounds the algae require to grow. Reefs of some kind have existed in the oceans, in one form or another, for hundreds of millions of years.
Because those algae depend on light, reef-building corals can survive only in clear, shallow and warm water, which restricts them to a narrow belt around the tropics. Within that belt reefs assume several shapes. Some cling to the coastline as a fringing reef; others lie well offshore, divided from land by a lagoon, as a barrier reef; and a few enclose open water in a rough ring, the atolls of the deep ocean. In the nineteenth century Charles Darwin suggested that these were not three separate forms but three stages of one process: a reef surrounding a slowly sinking volcanic island first becomes a barrier and at last an atoll, as the island vanishes beneath the sea. Much later, drilling through an atoll broadly confirmed his idea.
Reefs occupy less than one per cent of the sea floor, and yet they provide a home to something like a quarter of all known marine species. Fish, molluscs, crabs, sponges, worms and turtles crowd into the reef's crevices and channels, drawn by its abundance of food and hiding places. This is why the reef is so often compared to the tropical rainforest: both pack an astonishing variety of life into a limited space. That density is also of direct use to people. Reef fisheries feed millions in coastal communities, the reef itself absorbs the force of storm waves before they reach the shore, and in recent years its organisms have supplied chemists with promising leads for new medicines. Removing the reef, in other words, would cost far more than the loss of a spectacle.
The partnership on which the reef is built is also its weakness. When the water grows too warm, even by a degree or two sustained over several weeks, the coral expels the algae living in its tissues. Stripped of the algae, which give it both colour and most of its food, the coral turns a ghostly white — an event known as bleaching. A bleached coral is not yet dead, and if cooler conditions return quickly the algae may recolonise it; but if the heat persists, the starved polyps eventually die. As ocean temperatures have climbed, mass bleaching events that were once rare have struck the world's largest reef systems repeatedly within a single decade.
Warming is not the only pressure, and rarely acts alone. As the ocean absorbs more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere it grows slightly more acidic, which makes it harder for corals to build their skeletons in the first place. Closer to shore, run-off carrying soil and fertiliser clouds the water and feeds the seaweed that competes with coral, while destructive fishing methods break the reef apart directly. Each of these stresses is serious on its own; together they can overwhelm a reef's capacity to recover between shocks. It is the accumulation of pressures, scientists increasingly stress, rather than any single one, that pushes a reef past the point of return.
The outlook is not uniformly bleak. Some corals have been found to tolerate warmer or more acidic water than their neighbours, and reefs sheltered from local damage often recover faster after a disturbance. Conservationists have begun transplanting hardy corals onto degraded reefs and breeding varieties selected for their resistance to heat. Such measures, though, treat the symptoms rather than the cause, and restoring a reef by hand, at the scale of an entire ocean, is simply beyond reach. Most researchers agree that the fate of the world's reefs will be decided less by what happens in the water than by how quickly the emissions warming and acidifying the ocean are brought under control.

A decade ago the phrase 'gig economy' would have puzzled most people. Today it describes the way a substantial and growing slice of the workforce earns a living: not through a permanent post with a single employer, but through a succession of short, discrete tasks — a 'gig' — arranged through a smartphone application. A driver accepts a ride, a courier a delivery, a freelancer a design job, each transaction matched and priced by a digital platform that takes a cut and moves on to the next. The model spread first through transport and food delivery and has since reached cleaning, care work, translation and much else besides. Estimates of its size vary widely, in part because there is no agreement on who exactly counts as a gig worker, but few dispute that the sector has expanded far faster than the economy as a whole.
Its defenders point, above all, to flexibility. A gig worker can in principle log on when it suits them and log off when it does not, fitting paid work around study, childcare or another job in a way that a fixed shift never allows. For some this autonomy is genuinely liberating: a parent can earn during school hours, a student between lectures, a retiree for a few mornings a week. The platforms also lower the barriers to earning. Someone with a car and a driving licence can begin work within days, without the interviews, references and probation that traditional hiring involves. In economies where secure employment is scarce, that ease of entry is not a trivial benefit; it can be the difference between some income and none.
The same features, viewed from a different angle, look considerably less benign. The flexibility that lets a worker choose their hours also allows the platform to offer no guaranteed hours at all, and no wage for time spent waiting between tasks. Because gig workers are typically classified as self-employed rather than as staff, they fall outside most of the protections that employment law provides: no minimum wage for the hours actually worked, no paid holiday, no sick pay, no pension contributions, no redundancy rights. Income can swing sharply from week to week, making it hard to plan or to borrow. And the 'boss' is now an algorithm, one that assigns tasks, sets prices and rates performance according to rules the worker cannot see and cannot easily challenge. Being deactivated by an app can end a livelihood as abruptly as any dismissal, but with far less recourse.
At the centre of these disputes lies a single, deceptively simple question: are gig workers employees or independent contractors? The distinction matters enormously, because employees are entitled to protections that contractors are not. Platforms have generally insisted that their workers are independent operators who merely use the app as a tool, and that the flexibility workers enjoy is incompatible with employee status. Workers and unions have challenged that characterisation, and courts in several countries have begun to side with them. Britain's highest court ruled that drivers for one large ride-hailing firm were 'workers' owed the minimum wage, and legislators elsewhere have proposed new categories that sit somewhere between employee and contractor. The legal picture remains unsettled and varies sharply from one jurisdiction to the next.
The platforms have not been passive. Where courts or governments have forced their hand, some companies have introduced limited benefits — accident insurance, a minimum earnings floor while a task is under way, contributions towards holiday pay — while resisting full reclassification, which they warn would raise prices and, by requiring fixed schedules, destroy the very flexibility workers value. In one closely watched campaign, a coalition of platforms spent heavily to persuade voters to exempt them from a law that would have treated their drivers as employees, and won. Critics saw the outcome as evidence that the companies would go to almost any length to preserve a model built on a cheaper, less protected workforce.
What, then, is the balance? The honest answer is that the gig economy is neither the liberation its champions describe nor the uniform exploitation its harshest critics allege; it is both, in proportions that depend on the worker. For someone with other means of support, topping up their income by choice, the flexibility is real and the lack of benefits largely irrelevant. For someone who relies on gig work as their sole and full-time source of income, the same arrangement can mean long hours, no safety net and little control. The trouble is that a single set of rules governs both, and it was designed, in effect, around the first kind of worker while a growing share of the workforce resembles the second.
Resolving that mismatch is the real challenge, and it will not be met by nostalgia for the nine-to-five job, which suited many people poorly and is in any case not coming back. The more promising path, a number of economists argue, is to detach basic protections from the employment relationship altogether — to attach benefits to the worker rather than the job — so that flexibility and security need no longer be treated as opposites. Whether the political will exists to build such a system is another matter.

The Uses of Beauty: Nature, Culture and the Aesthetic Sense
Why do we find some things beautiful? The question seems almost too obvious to ask, and yet it has resisted answer for as long as it has been posed. A sunset, a symmetrical face, a sweeping landscape, a passage of music: people reach for the word 'beautiful' across every known culture, and often agree, to a striking degree, about what deserves it. That agreement is puzzling. Beauty confers no obvious advantage — one can survive perfectly well without ever being moved by a painting — and the pleasure it gives appears, on the face of it, to serve no purpose. Explaining beauty therefore means explaining something that looks, at first glance, like a luxury the mind has no reason to possess. Two broad kinds of explanation have long competed, and the disagreement between them runs deeper than it first appears. The mystery only deepens the more one considers it.
The first kind looks to our evolutionary past. On this view, aesthetic pleasure is not a luxury but a signal, a feeling that once guided our ancestors towards things that helped them survive and reproduce. Consider the widely reported preference, found in people who have never seen such a place, for open grassland dotted with trees and water — a landscape resembling the African savannah in which the human species is thought to have emerged, and one that would have offered food, shelter and a clear view of danger. Something similar is said to underlie the appeal of a symmetrical face: symmetry is hard to fake and may advertise a healthy, well-developed body, so a preference for it would have steered our ancestors towards fitter mates. Beauty, in short, is the mind's way of labelling what is good for us, and our raptures before a view or a face are the distant echo of choices that once mattered for survival.
Applied to art, this reasoning takes a more contentious turn. Some evolutionary thinkers propose that the human appetite for making and admiring art is itself a product of sexual selection, akin to the peacock's tail. A finely made object, on this account, is impressive precisely because it is costly and difficult to produce; the skill it displays advertises the intelligence, patience and resourcefulness of its maker, qualities a prospective mate might value. Art, then, would be a kind of fitness display, and our admiration for virtuosity a lingering trace of mate choice. The idea is ingenious, but many find it strained. It struggles to explain why we are moved by art made by the long dead, or by the anonymous, from whom no mating advantage could conceivably flow.
The competing tradition regards beauty as, above all, a product of culture. What a society finds beautiful, this school observes, changes dramatically across time and place: the fuller figures prized in one century are disdained in the next; the music that enraptures one culture strikes another as mere noise. If our sense of beauty were fixed by our genes, such variety would be hard to explain. Taste, on this view, is learned — absorbed from those around us, shaped by what we are exposed to and taught to admire. The sociologist Pierre Bourdieu went further, arguing that taste is never innocent: what a group calls beautiful tends to reflect and reinforce its social position, so that aesthetic judgements quietly serve to mark the boundaries between classes. To call something beautiful, on this reading, is partly to say something about oneself.
Each tradition can point to what the other struggles to explain. The evolutionary account is embarrassed by the sheer changeability of taste, and by our capacity to find beauty in the deliberately ugly, the dissonant or the disturbing — responses that no survival advantage seems to reward. The cultural account, for its part, must reckon with the preferences that do appear to cross every boundary: infants only a few months old, too young to have been taught anything, gaze longer at faces adults judge attractive, which is hard to square with the claim that beauty is learned from scratch. Such findings suggest that at least some of our responses are in place before culture can have shaped them. Neither pole, taken alone, accommodates all the evidence, and the more the two are pressed, the clearer it becomes that a satisfying account cannot be purely one or the other.
Recent thinking has therefore tended to blur the old opposition. One influential suggestion is that our aesthetic responses are not adaptations at all but by-products of mental capacities that evolved for other reasons — that the pleasure we take in music, for instance, exploits circuitry built for interpreting the emotional tones of the human voice. The psychologist Steven Pinker captured the idea, provocatively, by calling the arts a kind of 'cheesecake' — a confection that hits pleasure buttons which exist for quite different purposes. On this hybrid view, evolution supplies the raw machinery of pleasure while culture decides what will be poured into it, so that the same inherited responses can be trained on wildly different objects in different societies. Universality and variety are thus no longer rivals but two faces of a single arrangement.
None of this yet amounts to a settled theory, and it is worth asking whether one is even possible. Beauty is not a single thing: the pull of a face, the awe of a mountain and the satisfaction of an elegant proof may have little in common beyond the word we use for them, and an explanation that fits one may fail the others entirely. What the long argument has established, at least, is that the old choice between nature and culture was a false one. The interesting questions now are not whether beauty is inborn or acquired, but how deeply the inherited and the learned are entangled, and whether the human response to beauty is one phenomenon or many wearing a single name. That entanglement, rather than any tidy verdict, is likely to occupy the next generation of enquiry.
