A Leaf That Circled the Globe: The History of the Tea Trade

According to a story the Chinese have told for centuries, tea was discovered by accident around 2737 BCE, when leaves from a wild bush drifted into a pot of water being boiled by the emperor Shen Nong. Whatever the truth of the legend, the plant Camellia sinensis is native to the borderlands of south-western China and north-eastern India, and there is firm evidence that its leaves were being brewed into a drink in China well over two thousand years ago. At first tea was valued chiefly as a medicine, taken to aid digestion or to sharpen the mind during long hours of study, and only gradually did it become an everyday beverage. Different regions developed their own ways of preparing it, boiling, whisking or steeping the leaf, long before any single method became standard. The habit was slow to establish itself, but once acquired it proved remarkably durable, and within a few generations tea had woven itself into the ordinary rhythms of the day.

By the eighth century tea drinking had spread through every level of Chinese society, and a scholar named Lu Yu composed a celebrated treatise setting out how the leaf should be grown, prepared and drunk. Buddhist monks, who prized tea for keeping them awake during meditation, carried both the plant and the custom to Japan and Korea, where distinct traditions took root and, in time, elaborate ceremonies grew up around the simple act of drinking. Along the caravan routes to Tibet and Mongolia, compressed bricks of tea served as a form of currency, exchanged for horses and other goods. Tea had become not merely a drink but a cultural institution and a valuable article of trade.

Tea reached Europe surprisingly late. Portuguese and Dutch merchants trading in the East brought the first small quantities to the continent in the early seventeenth century, and it was the Dutch who first established a regular import. In England, where tea would eventually become almost a national symbol, it was at first an expensive curiosity sold in the coffee houses of London. Its fortunes changed when Catherine of Braganza, the Portuguese princess who married Charles II in 1662, made tea drinking fashionable at court. What had begun as a rarity for the wealthy slowly worked its way down the social scale as prices eased and supply grew.

As demand rose, governments saw an opportunity. The tax placed on tea in Britain climbed so high during the eighteenth century that a vast smuggling trade sprang up to supply the public with untaxed leaf, and by some estimates the smuggled product outsold the legal one. Taxation had political consequences too. When the British parliament insisted on its right to tax the tea sold in its American colonies, protesters in 1773 boarded ships in Boston harbour and threw their cargo into the sea — an act of defiance that helped set the colonies on the road to revolution. Few ordinary commodities have provoked quite so much trouble.

For most of this history China remained the sole source of the world's tea, and this monopoly created a difficulty for Britain that grew steadily more acute. The Chinese would accept payment only in silver, and as British consumption soared, silver drained out of the country to pay for it. To reverse the flow, British traders began to sell opium, grown in India, to China in ever larger quantities — a deeply damaging trade that poisoned relations between the two nations and eventually erupted into war. The tea in an English cup, comforting and domestic, was bound up with events far darker than most drinkers ever imagined.

The obvious remedy was to grow tea somewhere Britain itself controlled. In the 1830s the discovery that a variety of the tea plant grew wild in Assam, in north-eastern India, opened the way. Within a few decades vast plantations had been laid out in India and later in Ceylon, worked by labourers under harsh conditions and managed on an industrial scale unknown in China. Production soared and prices tumbled, until tea that had once been a luxury lay within reach of even the poorest households. The drink had become truly global — but the plantation system that achieved this left a bitter legacy of its own, one still visible in the regions where the great estates were carved out. The leaf that had begun as a Chinese secret was now grown, shipped and drunk on almost every continent, and the modest cup of tea had quietly become one of the most widely traded goods on earth.

The Fragments in Everything: Making Sense of Microplastics

Microplastics — usually defined as plastic particles smaller than five millimetres across — come from two broad sources. Some are manufactured small on purpose: the tiny beads once added to face scrubs and toothpastes, or the pellets from which larger plastic objects are moulded. These are known as primary microplastics. Far more, however, are secondary: they are the debris of larger items — bottles, bags, fishing nets, car tyres and synthetic clothing — that sunlight, waves and abrasion have broken down into ever smaller pieces. A single fleece jacket, researchers have found, can shed thousands of fibres in one wash, most of which slip through treatment plants and out into rivers and seas. Because plastics degrade so slowly, the fragments accumulate over time rather than disappearing, and the same durability that once made these materials so useful now makes their remnants almost impossible to remove.

What has startled scientists over the past decade is not that microplastics exist but that they are everywhere. They have been recovered from the deepest ocean trenches and from snow falling on remote mountain peaks; they drift in the air of city streets and settle in household dust. They have been detected in drinking water, in table salt, in honey and beer, and in the tissues of the fish and shellfish that people eat. More unsettling still, particles have been found in human blood, in the placenta, and in the lungs of living people. Wherever researchers have thought to look, it seems, they have found the fragments waiting.

And yet the crucial question — whether all this does us any harm — remains stubbornly open. It is one thing to detect a particle and quite another to show that it causes disease. Toxicologists point out that the mere presence of a substance in the body is not proof of danger; the dose, the size of the particles and the length of exposure all matter enormously. Some laboratory studies, using concentrations far higher than those found in the environment, have reported inflammation and cell damage in animals. Critics counter that such experiments tell us little about the low, chronic exposures that people actually experience, and that it is misleading to extrapolate from the extreme to the ordinary. Establishing a clear link between everyday exposure and any specific illness, they add, would require studies far larger and longer than any yet attempted.

Faced with this uncertainty, a number of public-health researchers argue for caution. Their reasoning is that the history of environmental hazards — from lead to asbestos to certain pesticides — is a history of harms that were dismissed or overlooked until the evidence became overwhelming, by which time enormous damage had already been done. Waiting for absolute proof, in this view, is itself a decision, and one with consequences. They advocate reducing exposure now, chiefly by curbing the production of unnecessary plastic, on the grounds that doing so carries little cost and potentially large benefit.

Others urge against alarm. They note that public anxiety can easily outrun the evidence, and that frightening people about a hazard whose scale is unknown may do harm of its own — diverting attention and money from risks that are far better established. One frequently voiced concern is that the chemicals added to plastics, rather than the particles themselves, may be the real danger; but here too, these researchers say, the data are patchy and inconclusive. The honest position, they maintain, is to admit how much we still do not know, and to fund the research that would settle the matter, rather than to act as though the verdict were already in.

Part of the reason the debate persists is that microplastics are genuinely difficult to study. There is, as yet, no agreed method for collecting and measuring them, so results from different laboratories are hard to compare; one team's 'particle' may not be counted at all by another. The smallest fragments — the nanoplastics that many suspect are the most likely to cross into cells and tissues — are the hardest of all to detect, and may turn out to be precisely the ones that matter most. Until measurement is standardised, firm conclusions about the true scale of exposure and its effects will remain elusive. The gap between what can be observed and what can be proved is, for now, unusually wide, and it is precisely into this gap that the competing arguments have rushed.

Governments, for their part, have not waited for the science to be resolved. Several countries have already banned the microbeads once common in cosmetics, an easy target because effective alternatives exist. Broader measures — limits on single-use plastics, or requirements that washing machines be fitted with filters — are under discussion in various places. Such steps will not remove the microplastics already dispersed throughout the environment, which will persist for generations to come. But they may slow the rate at which new fragments are added, and on a problem of this kind, most observers agree, prevention is likely to prove far easier than cure.

The Economics of Attention: Scarcity in an Age of Abundance

Economics is, at bottom, the study of how people allocate things that are scarce. For most of history the scarce resources were obvious: land, labour, raw materials, and above all information, which was costly to produce, to copy and to obtain. The digital age has upended this last assumption. Information is now generated in quantities no previous generation could have imagined, and it can be reproduced and distributed at almost no cost at all. But abundance in one thing, the economist Herbert Simon observed as early as 1971, creates scarcity in another. A wealth of information, he wrote, creates a poverty of something else — and that something is attention, the human capacity to notice and to concentrate. When information is effectively limitless, the ability to attend to it becomes the bottleneck, and therefore the thing worth fighting over. The insight, largely ignored at the time, has come to look increasingly prophetic, describing in a single sentence an economy that would not fully arrive for another forty years.

If attention is scarce, it can be bought and sold, and an entire industry has grown up to do exactly that. Much of what we think of as the free internet is not free at all: its true business is the capture and resale of attention. A service offered without charge — a search engine, a social network, a video platform — attracts users, measures with great precision what holds their gaze, and sells that gaze to advertisers. The user, in the well-worn phrase, is not the customer but the product. What is being traded is not the software but the minutes and seconds of human notice that the software can reliably deliver to those willing to pay.

This arrangement has consequences for how such services are designed. If a company's revenue depends on the total time its users spend, then its interest lies in maximising that time, whether or not doing so serves the users' own purposes. Features that seem trivial — the endless scroll that never reaches a bottom, the notification that tugs the eye back, the video that plays automatically — are better understood as instruments for extracting attention. Critics argue that this amounts to a systematic exploitation of human psychology, engineering compulsion in much the way a slot machine does, and that the costs, measured in distraction and anxiety, fall on individuals while the profits accrue to firms.

Not everyone reads the situation so darkly. Defenders of these services point out that people are not passive victims: they choose what to install and can choose to leave, and the same tools that distract can also inform, connect and entertain on a scale never before possible. The complaint about attention, on this view, is only the latest in a long line of anxieties about new media, from the novel to the television, each of which was once blamed for corrupting the public mind and each of which society eventually learned to absorb. To treat users as helpless, they add, is both condescending and contradicted by the many who use these very tools with discipline and profit.

Yet there is a feature of attention that makes it unlike most other commodities, and it lends the critics' case much of its force. Attention is strictly finite in a way that money is not: a person has only so many waking hours, and every one given to a screen is one not given to anything else. Economists speak of opportunity cost — the value of what must be forgone in order to obtain something — and where attention is concerned that cost is total, because the same instant cannot be spent twice. A market that grows by capturing ever more of this fixed quantity is, in the long run, competing not merely with rival products but with everything else a human being might do, from conversation to sleep. Seen in this light, the contest for a person's notice is not one industry among many but a claim on the raw material of a human life, and no amount of ingenuity can enlarge the supply.

The stakes rise further when attention is considered not as a private possession but as a collective resource. A functioning society depends on its citizens attending, at least sometimes, to matters of common concern — to public arguments, to evidence, to one another. If the mechanisms that now allocate attention reward whatever is most immediately gripping — the outrageous, the frightening, the tribal — then the quality of public life may suffer even where no single individual is obviously harmed. What captures attention most efficiently, some argue, is not what is most true or most important, and a system tuned to the former at the expense of the latter may quietly erode the shared understanding on which collective decision-making rests.

What, if anything, should follow from all this is fiercely contested. Some look to regulation, proposing that the most manipulative design techniques be restricted much as other forms of consumer exploitation already are. Others place their hope in changing business models, so that services are paid for directly and no longer need to harvest attention in order to survive. Still others doubt that any external remedy will work, and argue that the burden ultimately falls on individuals to cultivate their own defences, treating attention as a resource to be guarded deliberately rather than surrendered by default. What unites these otherwise divergent responses is a recognition that attention, once treated as limitless and therefore free, has become something a thoughtful person can no longer afford to spend without noticing.
