IMOClass 4 › Perimeter & Area

Perimeter & Area

Perimeter of Square & Rectangle

The perimeter is the total distance around a shape — the sum of all its sides. For a square, perimeter = 4 × side. For a rectangle, perimeter = 2 × (length + breadth).

So a square of side 5 cm has perimeter 4 × 5 = 20 cm, and a rectangle 6 cm × 4 cm has perimeter 2 × (6 + 4) = 20 cm.

Example 1: Find the perimeter of a square of side 5 cm.
4 × 5 = 20 cm.
Example 2: Find the perimeter of a rectangle 6 cm by 4 cm.
2 × (6 + 4) = 20 cm.
Quick recap
  • Perimeter = distance all the way around.
  • Square: 4 × side. Rectangle: 2 × (length + breadth).
✓ Quick check
What is the perimeter of a square of side 7 cm?
4 × 7 = 28 cm.
What is the perimeter of a rectangle 8 cm by 3 cm?
2 × (8 + 3) = 22 cm.

Area by Counting & Formulas

The area is the space inside a shape, measured in square units (sq cm). One way is to count the unit squares that fit inside.

Faster, we use formulas: area of a rectangle = length × breadth, and area of a square = side × side. So a 5 cm × 3 cm rectangle has area 15 sq cm.

Example 1: Find the area of a square of side 4 cm.
4 × 4 = 16 sq cm.
Example 2: Find the area of a rectangle 5 cm by 3 cm.
5 × 3 = 15 sq cm.
Quick recap
  • Area = space inside, in square units.
  • Rectangle: length × breadth. Square: side × side.
✓ Quick check
What is the area of a square of side 6 cm?
6 × 6 = 36 sq cm.
What is the area of a rectangle 7 cm by 2 cm?
7 × 2 = 14 sq cm.

Word Problems (Fencing, Carpet)

Real problems tell us whether to use perimeter or area. Fencing a garden uses the perimeter (the distance around). Carpeting or tiling a floor uses the area (the space inside).

Example 1: A garden is 10 m by 5 m. How much fencing is needed?
Perimeter = 2 × (10 + 5) = 30 m.
Example 2: A room floor is 4 m by 3 m. How much carpet is needed?
Area = 4 × 3 = 12 sq m.
Quick recap
  • Fencing → perimeter.
  • Carpet / tiles → area.
✓ Quick check
A square field has side 20 m. How much fencing is needed to go around it?
Perimeter = 4 × 20 = 80 m.
A floor is 6 m by 5 m. How much carpet (area) is needed?
Area = 6 × 5 = 30 sq m.
