It is given that,, $a*b = \frac{{ab}}{2},\forall a,b \in Q - \{ 0\}$.
Let $e$ be the identity element for *.
$\therefore$ $a*e = \frac{{ae}}{2}$
$\Rightarrow$ $a = \frac{{ae}}{2} \Rightarrow e = 2$
