People have always needed to count — to keep track of cattle, grain and money. Long before electricity, clever inventors built machines to help. This chapter tells the story of the machines that came before the computer.

🔵Counting long ago & the Abacus

The very first 'calculators' were simple. People counted on their fingers, made marks on stone, and used pebbles and knotted ropes to keep totals.

Then came the Abacus — the first real counting device, made thousands of years ago in ancient China. It is a wooden frame with beads on rods. By sliding the beads, you can add and subtract quickly. The abacus is still used in some places today!

The abacus has no battery and no screen — yet a trained user can do sums on it very fast. It shows that a 'machine' can be simple and clever at the same time.

🟢Napier's Bones & Pascal's machine

As sums got harder, inventors built better machines:

The Pascaline used turning wheels and gears, a bit like an old clock — when you typed a number it moved the gears to work out the answer. It was a big step towards a real machine that calculates on its own.

Charles Babbage designed a machine called the Analytical Engine. It had all the big ideas of a modern computer — a place for input, a part to calculate (he called it the 'mill'), a memory to store numbers, and output — all long before electricity. That is why he is called the 'Father of the Computer'.
