1 Quick Introduction

English

Articles are the little words a, an and the that come before nouns. A and an are indefinite (any one), while the is definite (a particular one). "I saw a dog" means any dog; "I saw the dog" means a specific one we both know.

2 A Real-Life Situation

Imagine this

You tell a story:

You: I bought a book and an umbrella. The book was about the sun.

Why this form? The first time, the things are new, so we use a/an. The second time we already know which book — so we switch to the. And the sun is unique, so it always takes 'the'.

4 A or An — Listen to the Sound

The choice between a and an depends on the sound of the next word, not its spelling.

  • Use a before a consonant sound: a cat, a tree.
  • Use an before a vowel sound: an egg, an idea.

The clever exceptions all come from sound:

  • a university, a European, a one-rupee coin — these begin with a 'y' or 'w' consonant sound.
  • an hour, an honest man, an MLA — the first letter is silent or sounds like a vowel.

5 The Definite Article & the Zero Article

Use the when the noun is specific or already known:

  • Something mentioned before: I have a pen. The pen is red.
  • Unique things: the sun, the moon, the sky.
  • Superlatives: the tallest boy.
  • Rivers, seas, mountain ranges: the Ganga, the Himalayas.

Use no article (zero article) with:

  • Uncountable/abstract nouns in general: I love music. Honesty pays.
  • Plural nouns in general: Dogs are loyal.
  • Most proper nouns, languages, meals, games: Hindi, breakfast, chess.
