A Two-Dimensional (2D) shape is a flat geometric shape. It has length and width, but no thickness or depth, which means it lies completely flat on a sheet of paper. To understand, sort, and classify these shapes, we study their unique mathematical structural properties:

  • Sides (Edges): The straight or curved boundary lines that form the outer perimeter layout of the shape.
  • Vertices (Corners): The points where two straight sides meet. A single corner is called a vertex, and more than one are called vertices.
  • Attributes of Standard Shapes:
  • Circle: Formed by a single continuous curved line with 0 straight sides and 0 vertices.
  • Triangle: A strong three-sided shape containing exactly 3 straight sides and 3 vertices.
  • Square: A special four-sided shape with 4 straight sides of completely equal length and 4 vertices.
  • Rectangle: A four-sided shape with 4 straight sides and 4 vertices, where opposite sides are equal (2 matching long sides and 2 matching short sides).
  • Oval: A smooth, elongated curved shape with 0 straight sides and 0 vertices.
