In the previous topic, we looked at flat, two-dimensional (2D) shapes. Now, we are stepping out of the flat page and exploring Three-Dimensional (3D) solid shapes! Unlike 2D shapes, 3D shapes are solid objects that occupy space. They have length, width, and height.

To investigate and classify these solid structures, we study their primary mathematical structural properties:

  • Face: A flat or curved individual surface layout on a solid object.
  • Edge: The line segment boundary where two distinct faces meet.
  • Vertex (Corner): A sharp corner point where three or more edges intersect.

Let's look at the unique attributes of our core global 3D shapes:

1. Cube: Built from exactly 6 identical, flat square faces. It has 12 straight edges and 8 vertices.

2. Cuboid: Similar to a cube, but its 6 flat faces are rectangles (or a mix of squares and rectangles). It also has 12 straight edges and 8 vertices.

3. Sphere: A perfectly round solid ball. It contains exactly 1 continuous curved surface, 0 straight edges, and 0 sharp vertices.

4. Cylinder: Built like a straight tube or can. It features 2 flat circular faces (top and bottom) and 1 smooth curved surface wrapped around the middle. It has 2 curved edges and 0 sharp vertices.

5. Cone: Slipped into a party-hat look, a cone has exactly 1 flat circular baseline face, 1 continuous curved surface wrapped around, 1 curved edge, and 1 sharp point at the very top called an apex (or vertex).

Movement Dynamics: Roll, Slide, or Stack

The types of surfaces an object has determine how it moves and interacts with other solid objects:

  • Roll: Objects with a curved surface can roll smoothly down a ramp or across a flat floor.
  • Slide: Objects with a flat face can slide along a flat surface when pushed.
  • Stack: Objects with steady, flat parallel faces can be stacked safely on top of one another without falling over. Some shapes can execute multiple movements depending on which surface is resting on the ground!

An inspector holding a solid 3D math block notes these parameters: Count of flat faces = 2, Count of curved surfaces = 1, Count of sharp corner vertices = 0. Identify the name of this solid object.

  1. Analyze the surface properties: The block has a mixture of flat faces and a curved surface. This rules out the sphere (only curved) and the cube/cuboid (only flat).
  2. Compare the remaining candidates: A cone has 1 flat face and 1 curved surface. A cylinder has 2 flat faces and 1 curved surface.
  3. The count of flat faces matches the Cylinder structure perfectly.
