🔵Counting Numbers

Counting is the foundation of mathematics! In Grade 2, we extend our counting skills up to 1000.

  • Forward counting in sequences means moving ahead one step at a time (+1) or following a given numerical path.
  • Backward counting means stepping down one value at a time (-1) from any 3-digit number.
  • Skip counting allows you to count large items quickly by jumping over numbers using fixed intervals (2\text{s}, 5\text{s}, 10\text{s}, or 100\text{s}).
  • Clustering means arranging scattered items into organized equal groups (like groups of 10 or 100) so they are easier to track.
  • Base-ten blocks are physical tools that represent values: a single unit cube is a One, a vertical rod of ten cubes is a Ten, and a flat square grid of one hundred cubes is a Hundred.

  1. Calculate the value of the hundreds: 4 \times 100 = 400.
  2. Calculate the value of the tens: 3 \times 10 = 30.
  3. Calculate the value of the ones: 7 \times 1 = 7.
  4. Combine the values together: 400 + 30 + 7 = 437.

Start at 502 and count backward exactly 4 steps. What numbers do you say?
