To truly master a three-digit number, you need to be able to read it, write it from what you see or hear, and understand exactly where it sits among other numbers. This topic breaks down these essential visual and structural processing skills:
- Reading 3-Digit Numerals Fluently: Look at a number like 425 and immediately recognize it as a single complete value rather than separate digits (4, 2, and 5).
- Writing from Prompts: Translating visual blocks or spoken clues (auditory prompts) straight into standard math symbols.
- Number Names from 1 to 1000: Spelling out numbers completely in words. In the standard international framework, we do not use the word "and" between the hundreds and tens columns (for example, we write three hundred forty, not three hundred and forty).
- Structuring Numbers on an Open Number Line: Drawing a blank, unscaled line to visually position numbers relative to one another. It helps you see that 310 is closer to 300 than it is to 400.
- Sequencing Consecutive and Non-Consecutive Numbers: Consecutive numbers* follow each other naturally in order without gaps (e.g., 567, 568, 569).
- Non-consecutive numbers have large jumps between them (e.g., 105, 420, 895), but they can still be arranged from smallest to largest (ascending) or largest to smallest (descending).
- Finding Patterns in Missing Numbers: Using clues to identify missing elements in broken paths or tracks by tracking how the digits in the HTO (Hundreds, Tens, Ones) places are shifting.
- Before, After, and Between: Finding structural neighbors:
- Before (Predecessor): The value obtained by subtracting 1 (-1).
- After (Successor): The value obtained by adding 1 (+1).
- Between: The middle value bounded by numbers on its left and right.

- Answer: $804$
Write the number $706$ in words.
- $7$ hundreds $=$ "seven hundred".
- $0$ tens, so we skip the tens word.
- $6$ ones $=$ "six".
- Answer: seven hundred six
Find the number that comes just before $500$.
- "Before" means subtract $1$.
- $500 - 1 = 499$.
- Answer: $499$
Find the number that lies between $349$ and $351$.
- The "between" number is the middle one.
- After $349$ comes $350$, then $351$.
- Answer: $350$
Arrange these numbers in ascending order: $415$, $145$, $514$.
- Compare the hundreds digit first: $1 < 4 < 5$.
- So $145$ is smallest and $514$ is largest.
