🔵Measurement - Length
Length tells us how long an object is from one end to the very other end. It can also tell us how tall someone is (height) or how far apart two places are (distance). In Grade 2, we learn how to make smart estimates, use descriptive comparing words, and transition from counting with our bodies to measuring precisely with scientific metric tools.
- Estimating Lengths Using Standard Visual Benchmarks: An estimate is a smart guess. To make a great estimate, you can look at real-world objects as benchmarks:
- 1 Centimetre (\text{cm}): About the width of your little finger or the width of a standard staple.
- 1 Metre (\text{m}): About the distance from the floor to a doorknob, or one giant step taken by an adult.
- Comparing Lengths Using Relational Adjectives: When we look at two or more objects, we use specific comparative language to describe their lengths:
- Long, Longer, Longest: Used for horizontal lengths (like ropes or pencils).
- Short, Shorter, Shortest: Used for small items or small heights.
- Tall, Taller, Tallest: Used for vertical heights (like buildings or people).
- Transitioning from Non-Standard to Standard Units: In the past, people measured using body parts like handspans (the distance from your thumb to your little finger when spread out) or cubits. However, because everyone's hands are different sizes, non-standard measurements are unfair and inconsistent! This is why the world created standard units, which are exactly the same size for everyone, everywhere.
- Introduction to Centimetres (\text{cm}) and Metres (\text{m}): * Centimetre (\text{cm}): A small standard metric unit used to measure smaller objects like erasers, crayons, and notebooks.
- Metre (\text{m}): A large standard metric unit used to measure bigger spaces like classrooms, playgrounds, and trees.
- The Golden Metric Rule: It takes exactly 100 centimetres packed tightly together to equal a single metre.

- Measuring Lengths Using a Ruler or Measuring Tape: To measure perfectly:
1. Align the very left edge of your object with the 0 mark on your ruler (not the edge of the physical ruler itself).
2. Read straight down the number line to where the object ends.

A surveyor needs to catalog the sizes of different classroom items. Choose the best standard metric unit (\text{cm} or \text{m}) to measure: (a) The length of a plastic sharpener, and (b) The height of the classroom door.
- Analyze item (a): A plastic sharpener is a small handheld object. Its size is tiny, close to our visual finger benchmark. Therefore, the centimetre (\text{cm}) is the ideal unit.
- Analyze item (b): A classroom door is large, tall, and much higher than an adult's height. Measuring it in tiny finger widths would take too long. Therefore, the metre (\text{m}) is the ideal unit.
