Weight and mass tell us how heavy or light an object is. When you pick up a heavy school bag and a light pencil, your hands instantly feel the difference. In Grade 2, we learn how to test weights using balance scales, discover standard metric measurement tools, and solve real-world mass stories!

  • Comparing Weights Using Interactive Balance Scale Buckets: A balance scale has two hanging buckets. It is a fantastic visual way to compare weights without numbers:
  • If both buckets hang completely flat in a straight line, the objects weigh the exact same amount (Balanced).
  • If you place a heavy object in one bucket, that side will sink down, causing the lighter bucket to tip way up into the air!
  • Introduction to Standard Metric Weights: Just like length has standard meters, weight has its own global standard units so measurements are completely fair and identical everywhere:
  • Gram (\text{g}): A tiny metric weight unit used to measure very light, small things. A standard plastic paperclip, a small grape, or a single metal coin weighs about 1\text{ g}.
