🔵Position and Direction

Spatial awareness helps us understand where objects are in relation to ourselves and other things. Whether you are navigating a grid map, following a path, or placing shapes in order, you use precise words to describe direction and position.

  • Left and Right: Positions based on your body alignment. When looking at a flat page or screen, your left hand points to the Left side and your right hand points to the Right side.
  • Clockwise and Counter-Clockwise: * Clockwise: Turning or moving in the exact same circular direction as the hands on an analog clock face (from the top, looping around to the right).
  • Counter-Clockwise: Turning or moving in the opposite circular direction of clock hands (from the top, looping around to the left).
  • Positional Language:
  • Above / Below: Vertically straight upper or lower levels (e.g., a ceiling fan is above you; the floor is below you).
  • Over / Under: Similar to above/below, but often implies one object covering, passing across, or hanging directly over another.
  • Behind: Positioned at the back side of an object or person.
  • Simple Grid Maps and Paths: A grid map splits a tracking space into lines of square boxes. Moving across it is described as taking discrete steps up, down, left, or right.
  • Relative Positioning and Navigational Instructions: Explaining directions step-by-step from a specific starting point. A position is always relative, which means it can change if your starting viewpoint changes!

Look at the grid diagram below. A toy robot starts on the square marked S. If it moves 2 squares Up, and then moves 1 square to the Right, which square box does it land on? ``ascii │ [ A ] │ [ B ] │ [ ] │ │ [ ] │ [ ] │ [ C ] │ │ [ S ] │ [ ] │ [ ] │ ``

  1. Locate the starting position at box S.
  2. Follow the first operational instruction: Move 2 squares Up. Stepping up two rows places the robot in the top-left box containing the letter A.
  3. Follow the second operational instruction: From box A, move 1 square to the Right.
  4. Moving one column to the right lands the robot exactly on box B.
Answer: Box B

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • Left and Right are opposite horizontal directions. On a flat page grid, left moves toward the start of a sentence, right moves toward the end.
  • Clockwise matches the circular rotation of analog clock hands, while Counter-Clockwise loops in the reverse path.
  • Over and above refer to an elevated higher position. Under and below refer to a lower position.
  • Behind indicates placement on the rear or back side of an object.
  • Moving across grid maps requires counting steps box-by-box while keeping your directional orientation stable.
