🔵Represent Fractions on a Number Line

A number line shows fractions between whole numbers. To plot a fraction:

  1. Divide the distance from 0 to 1 into equal parts (number = denominator)
  2. Count that many parts from 0 (number = numerator)

Example: 3/4 → divide into 4 equal parts, count 3 from 0.

Show 3/4 on a number line. Divide 0-to-1 into 4 equal parts. Count 3 steps from 0. Mark the point at 3/4.
Where is 1/3 between 0 and 1? Divide into 3 equal parts. 1/3 is the first mark after 0 — one-third of the way to 1.
Plot 1/2 and 3/4. Which is larger? 3/4 is farther from 0 than 1/2. So 3/4 > 1/2.

Order from smallest to largest: 3/5, 1/5, 4/5. Same denominator. Compare numerators: 1 < 3 < 4. Order: 1/5 < 3/5 < 4/5.

🟣Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent fractions look different but have the same value.

1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 4/8

To find equivalent fractions: multiply both top and bottom by the same number.

Example: 2/3 x (4/4) = 8/12. So 2/3 = 8/12.

Find equivalent to 1/2 with denominator 8. 1/2 x (4/4) = 4/8. So 1/2 = 4/8.
