🔵Interpret Scaled Bar Graphs

In a scaled bar graph, each unit of bar height (or each picture symbol) represents more than one item — such as 2, 5, or 10.

To read: bar value = bar height x scale

Always read the key or label to know the scale.

👀 See a worked example
Scale is 1 symbol = 5 children. There are 3 symbols. How many children? 3 x 5 = 15 children.
Bar graph scale = 2. Bar reaches height of 7 grid lines. Value? 7 x 2 = 14.
Scale is 10. Bar height is 4.5 lines. Value? 4.5 x 10 = 45.

🟢Line Plots with Fractional Units

A line plot is a graph that shows data points along a number line. Each X represents one data value.

Fractional line plots use number lines with fractions (like 0, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1).

To read: count the X marks above each value.

👀 See a worked example
Plot: 2 1/4, 2 1/2, 2 1/4, 2 3/4. How many X marks at 2 1/4? 2 leaves were 2 1/4 inches. 2 X marks at 2 1/4.
Which fractional length appears most? The value with the most X marks above it is the mode (most common value).
How many measurements are above 1 1/2? Count all X marks to the right of 1 1/2 on the number line.
