🔵Fractions as Decimals

A decimal is another way to write a fraction. A decimal point separates the whole number part from the fractional part.

  • Tenths place: first digit after decimal = denominator 10 (e.g. 3/10 = 0.3)
  • Hundredths place: second digit after decimal = denominator 100 (e.g. 25/100 = 0.25)

Think of it like Indian currency: Rs.1 = 100 paise. 10 paise = 10/100 = 0.10. 1 paisa = 1/100 = 0.01.

Converting fractions to decimals: Make the denominator 10 or 100, then write in decimal form. Adding a zero to the right of a decimal does NOT change its value: 0.3 = 0.30.

Write 7/10 as a decimal. Denominator is 10, so we need 1 digit after decimal point. Numerator is 7. Write as 0.7. Check: 0.7 means 7 tenths = 7/10.
Write 0.45 as a fraction in simplest form. 0.45 has 2 decimal places (hundredths). Write as 45/100. Simplify by dividing by 5: 9/20. Check: 9 and 20 have no common factor except 1. Answer: 9/20.
Add 3/10 + 5/100 and write as a decimal. Convert 3/10 = 30/100. Add: 30/100 + 5/100 = 35/100 = 0.35. Or: 0.30 + 0.05 = 0.35.

🟢Compare Decimals

Comparing decimals: line up the decimal points and compare digit by digit from left to right.

Steps:

  • Line up the decimal points (add zeros if needed)
  • Compare the ones place first
  • If same, compare tenths
  • If same, compare hundredths
  • The first place where digits differ decides which is larger

Important: 0.3 = 0.30 (adding a zero on the right does not change the value, it just allows comparison).

Compare 0.6 and 0.59. Write 0.6 as 0.60. Compare tenths: 6 vs 5. 6 > 5, so 0.6 > 0.59.
Compare 1.25 and 0.98. Compare ones: 1 vs 0. Since 1 > 0, answer is 1.25 > 0.98. (No need to compare further.)
Riya ran 100m in 14.5 seconds. Priya ran in 14.45 seconds. Who was faster? In racing, smaller time = faster. Compare 14.5 and 14.45: write 14.50. Tenths: 5 vs 4. 5 > 4, so 14.5 > 14.45. Priya's time (14.45) is less, so Priya was faster.

  • Compare left to right: ones, tenths, hundredths

  • In real-life problems, read carefully — smaller time = faster!

🟣Add and Subtract Decimals

The most important rule for adding/subtracting decimals: ALWAYS line up the decimal points!

Column Method Steps:

  • Write numbers with decimal points aligned
  • Add zeros to make same number of decimal places
  • Add or subtract from RIGHT to LEFT (like whole numbers)
  • Bring the decimal point STRAIGHT DOWN into the answer
  • Carry or borrow just like with whole numbers

Add 4.25 + 0.75. Line up decimals: 4.25 + 0.75. Hundredths: 5+5=10 (write 0, carry 1). Tenths: 2+7+1=10 (write 0, carry 1). Ones: 4+0+1=5. Answer: 5.00 = 5.
Subtract 1.35 from 3.8. Write 3.8 as 3.80. Hundredths: 0-5 (borrow): 10-5=5. Tenths: 7-3=4. Ones: 3-1=2. Answer: 2.45.
Riya bought a notebook for Rs.25.50 and a pen for Rs.12.75. She paid Rs.50. How much change? Total cost: 25.50 + 12.75 = 38.25. Change: 50.00 - 38.25 = 11.75. Answer: Rs.11.75 change.
