🔵Reading and Writing 6-Digit Numbers
In the Indian Number System, a 6-digit number uses places up to Lakhs. Each digit gets its value from the place it occupies.
- Lakhs (L) = 1,00,000
- Ten Thousands (TTh) = 10,000
- Thousands (Th) = 1,000
- Hundreds (H) = 100
- Tens (T) = 10
- Ones (O) = 1
To read a 6-digit number like 4,53,248: say the Lakhs digit first, then the Thousands group, then the last three digits. Answer: Four lakh fifty-three thousand two hundred forty-eight.
Always place commas: first comma after hundreds, second comma after thousands — e.g. 7,84,345.

🟢Rounding to Nearest 10,000 and Nearest Lakh
Rounding makes large numbers easier to work with. We round to the nearest ten thousand or nearest lakh.
Rounding Rules:
- Identify the place you are rounding to
- Look at the digit immediately to its right
- If that digit is 5 or more — Round Up (increase by 1)
- If that digit is 4 or less — Round Down (keep same)
- Replace all digits to the right of the target place with zeros
Memory tip: 5 or more, let it soar! 4 or less, let it rest!

🟣Comparing Multi-Digit Numbers
To compare numbers with up to 6 digits, compare digit by digit from left to right, starting with the highest place value.
Strategy:
- Count the digits — more digits = bigger number
- If same number of digits, compare the Lakhs place first
- If Lakhs are equal, compare Ten Thousands, and so on
- The first place where digits differ decides which number is greater
Use symbols: > (greater than), < (less than), = (equal to)
On a number line, numbers to the right are always greater.
