🔵Reading and Writing 6-Digit Numbers

In the Indian Number System, a 6-digit number uses places up to Lakhs. Each digit gets its value from the place it occupies.

  • Lakhs (L) = 1,00,000
  • Ten Thousands (TTh) = 10,000
  • Thousands (Th) = 1,000
  • Hundreds (H) = 100
  • Tens (T) = 10
  • Ones (O) = 1

To read a 6-digit number like 4,53,248: say the Lakhs digit first, then the Thousands group, then the last three digits. Answer: Four lakh fifty-three thousand two hundred forty-eight.

Always place commas: first comma after hundreds, second comma after thousands — e.g. 7,84,345.

Write 'Seven lakh eighty-four thousand three hundred fifteen' in figures. Seven lakh = 7,00,000. Eighty-four thousand = 84,000. Three hundred fifteen = 315. Combine: 7,00,000 + 84,000 + 315 = 7,84,315.
In 5,42,789, what is the place value of the digit 4? Positions from right: O(9), T(8), H(7), Th(2), TTh(4), L(5). The digit 4 is in the Ten Thousands place. Place value = 4 x 10,000 = 40,000.
Write 9,06,510 in expanded form. 9 in Lakhs = 9,00,000. 0 in Ten Thousands = 0. 6 in Thousands = 6,000. 5 in Hundreds = 500. 1 in Tens = 10. 0 in Ones = 0. Expanded form: 9,00,000 + 6,000 + 500 + 10.

🟢Rounding to Nearest 10,000 and Nearest Lakh

Rounding makes large numbers easier to work with. We round to the nearest ten thousand or nearest lakh.

Rounding Rules:

  • Identify the place you are rounding to
  • Look at the digit immediately to its right
  • If that digit is 5 or more — Round Up (increase by 1)
  • If that digit is 4 or less — Round Down (keep same)
  • Replace all digits to the right of the target place with zeros

Memory tip: 5 or more, let it soar! 4 or less, let it rest!

Round 3,47,682 to the nearest 10,000. The ten-thousands digit is 4. Look at the thousands digit: 7. Since 7 >= 5, round up. The 4 becomes 5, all digits to its right become 0. Answer: 3,50,000.
Round 6,32,499 to the nearest lakh. The lakhs digit is 6. Look at the ten-thousands digit: 3. Since 3 < 5, round down. The 6 stays 6, all digits to its right become 0. Answer: 6,00,000.
Round 8,76,543 to nearest 10,000 and nearest lakh. To nearest 10,000: TTh digit is 7; next digit is 6 (>=5), round up — 8,80,000. To nearest lakh: L digit is 8; next digit is 7 (>=5), round up — 9,00,000.

  • Rounding gives an approximate value that is easier to use
  • Always look one place to the RIGHT of the target place
  • 5 or more: round up (increase target digit by 1); 4 or less: keep same
  • All digits to the right of the target place become zero

🟣Comparing Multi-Digit Numbers

To compare numbers with up to 6 digits, compare digit by digit from left to right, starting with the highest place value.

Strategy:

  • Count the digits — more digits = bigger number
  • If same number of digits, compare the Lakhs place first
  • If Lakhs are equal, compare Ten Thousands, and so on
  • The first place where digits differ decides which number is greater

Use symbols: > (greater than), < (less than), = (equal to)

On a number line, numbers to the right are always greater.

Fill in: 5,89,000 ___ 5,98,000 Lakhs both 5 (same). Ten-thousands: 8 vs 9. Since 8 < 9, the answer is 5,89,000 < 5,98,000.
Order from smallest to largest: 3,45,678; 4,00,000; 3,54,678; 3,45,687 4,00,000 has largest lakhs (4). Among the three 3-lakh numbers: compare ten-thousands (4 vs 5) — 3,54,678 is largest. Between 3,45,678 and 3,45,687: compare ones (8 vs 7) — 3,45,687 > 3,45,678. Order: 3,45,678 < 3,45,687 < 3,54,678 < 4,00,000.
