Vidi wonders: To open a drawer you pull it; to close it you push it. Every day you use a hidden helper called a force.

A force is simply a push or a pull. We use forces all day long, often without noticing:

  • 👐 A push moves something away from you (pushing a door, kicking a ball).
  • 🤝 A pull brings something towards you (pulling a rope, opening a drawer).

Nothing moves, stops or changes direction by itself — a force has to act on it.

Is kicking a ball a push or a pull?

A kick is a push! Your foot pushes the ball away from you, so it rolls forward. A push always moves something away.

Can a force be big or small?

Yes! A gentle push moves a light toy a little. A big, strong push is needed to move something heavy like a full box. Bigger force, bigger effect.

Forces can change the motion (movement) of things in several ways:

How does a goalkeeper stop a ball?

The goalkeeper's hands push against the moving ball with a force. That force stops the ball's motion — no more goal!

Can a force change shape too?

Yes! Squashing clay or stretching a rubber band uses a force that changes their shape, not just their motion. Forces are powerful helpers.

Friction is a force that slows down moving things when two surfaces rub together.

  • 🛑 More friction on rough surfaces (a ball stops quickly on grass or a road).
  • ⛸️ Less friction on smooth surfaces (a ball slides far on ice or a marble floor).

Friction can be helpful too — it lets us walk without slipping and helps brakes stop a bicycle!

Is friction good or bad?

Both! Friction slows things down, which can be a nuisance. But it also helps us — we can grip, walk and stop a bike because of friction. Without it, we would slip everywhere!

Why is ice so slippery?

Ice is very smooth, so there is very little friction. With almost nothing to slow them down, our feet slide easily — that is why we slip on ice.

Why don't we float off the Earth?

Earth's gravity constantly pulls us down towards its centre, holding us firmly on the ground. That is why we can walk, run and jump back down safely.

Do astronauts have gravity?

Far out in space, away from Earth, gravity is very weak, so astronauts float! That is why everything drifts around inside a spaceship.

A magnet is special — it can pull (attract) some things without even touching them.

  • 🚫 Magnets do NOT attract wood, plastic, paper or rubber.
  • ↔️ Two magnets can attract (pull together) or repel (push apart), depending on which ends face each other.

Will a magnet pick up a plastic spoon?

No. Magnets only attract things made of iron or steel. A plastic spoon, a wooden pencil or a paper sheet will not stick to a magnet.

Why do two magnets sometimes push apart?

Every magnet has two ends (poles). Same poles push apart (repel), and opposite poles pull together (attract). Flip one magnet and you feel the push or the pull!

🧺 You will need

  • A magnet (a fridge magnet works)
  • Small safe objects: a paper clip, a coin, a plastic toy, a pencil, a key, an eraser
  • A notebook

👣 Steps

  1. Before testing, GUESS which objects the magnet will attract.
  2. Hold the magnet close to each object, one at a time.
  3. Watch — does it stick (attract) or not?
  4. Sort the objects into two piles: 'Magnet sticks' and 'No stick'.
  5. Which material did the magnet always attract? (Hint: iron or steel!)
👀 Watch for: You will find the magnet attracts only iron and steel things (like a paper clip), but not wood, plastic or paper. Guessing then testing is real science!
🛡️ Grown-up helper: Keep magnets away from phones, tablets and computers — strong magnets can harm them. Never put magnets in your mouth.
