Rocks & Soil

Explorer Star
Hi! I'm Vidi. Let's explore Rocks & Soil together — wonder, read, then play the games to win a ⭐!

🌱The Ground Beneath Us

💭
Vidi wonders: Under the grass, the roads and your house lies a hidden world of rock and soil. What is it made of?

Everything we stand on is part of the Earth's surface. Just below us are two important things:

  • 🪨 Rocks — hard, solid pieces of the Earth. Mountains, pebbles and sand all come from rock.
  • 🟫 Soil — the loose top layer where plants grow. It is made of tiny bits of rock mixed with dead leaves and tiny living things.

🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions

Are mountains made of rock?

Yes! Mountains are giant masses of solid rock. Over millions of years, wind and water slowly wear them down into smaller rocks, pebbles and sand.

Is sand a kind of rock?

Yes — sand is just millions of tiny grains of rock, worn down very small by water and wind over a very long time.

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • Below us is rock and soil.
  • Rocks are hard, solid pieces of the Earth.
  • Soil is the loose top layer where plants grow.

🐝Different Kinds of Rocks

💭
Vidi wonders: A smooth river pebble and a rough, sparkly stone are both rocks. Why are rocks so different?

Rocks come in many colours, shapes and hardness. Some are useful in special ways:

  • 🧱 Hard, strong rocks like granite are used to build houses and roads.
  • ✏️ Some soft rocks are used to make chalk and pencil 'lead'.
  • 💎 Some rocks hold shiny gems and useful metals like iron and gold.
  • 🪨 River pebbles are smooth; mountain rocks are rough.
🪨Hard rock🧱Building💎GemsRocks come in many kinds

🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions

Why are river pebbles smooth?

As pebbles tumble along in the moving river water for a long time, their rough edges get worn away. Slowly they become smooth and round.

Where do we get metals like iron?

Metals are found inside certain rocks deep in the ground. People dig them out from mines and then take the metal out of the rock.

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • Rocks vary in colour, shape and hardness.
  • Hard rocks build houses; some rocks hold metals and gems.
  • River pebbles are smooth; mountain rocks are rough.

☀️How Soil Is Made

💭
Vidi wonders: Soil takes hundreds of years to form. How does hard rock turn into soft soil?

Soil is made very slowly, over a very long time, in these steps:

  • 🪨 Big rocks are broken by Sun, rain, wind and ice (this is called weathering).
  • 🪨 They break into smaller and smaller pieces — pebbles, then grains.
  • 🍂 Dead leaves, plants and tiny creatures mix in and rot.
  • 🟫 Together they make rich, dark soil where plants can grow.
🪨🌧️weather🟫Rock → weathering → soil

🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions

What is weathering?

Weathering is the slow breaking of rocks by the weather — heat, rain, wind and ice. Over many years it crumbles big rocks into tiny bits.

Why is good soil dark?

Rich soil is dark because it has lots of rotted leaves and plant bits mixed in. This makes it full of food for plants — perfect for growing.

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • Soil forms very slowly over a long time.
  • Weather breaks rock into tiny bits (weathering).
  • Rotted leaves and plants mix in to make rich soil.

💧Layers of the Soil

💭
Vidi wonders: Dig deep into the ground and you pass through different layers. What changes as you go down?

If we dig down, we find soil is made of layers, one below another:

  • 🌱 Topsoil — the dark, rich top layer. Plants' roots grow here. It has the most food for plants.
  • 🟫 Subsoil — a lighter, harder layer below, with more stones and fewer roots.
  • 🪨 Bedrock — solid, hard rock at the very bottom.

🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions

Why do plant roots stay in the topsoil?

The topsoil is soft, dark and full of food and water for plants. So most roots spread out in this top layer where they can drink and feed easily.

What is right at the bottom?

At the very bottom is bedrock — solid, hard rock. It is too hard for roots, and the whole soil sits on top of it.

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • Soil has layers: topsoil, subsoil and bedrock.
  • Topsoil is dark and rich — plants' roots grow here.
  • Bedrock is the solid hard rock at the bottom.

🍃Why Soil Matters

💭
Vidi wonders: Without soil, there would be no wheat, no rice, no vegetables. How does soil feed the whole world?

Soil is one of nature's greatest treasures. It does so much for us:

  • 🌾 Plants and crops grow in it — giving us food.
  • 💧 It soaks up rain water and stores it.
  • 🐛 It is home to worms, insects and tiny living things.
  • 🌳 It holds tree roots firmly in place.

We must protect soil — too much cutting of trees can wash good soil away. Plants and trees hold the soil and keep it healthy.

🌱🐛💧Soil grows our food

🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions

How do earthworms help the soil?

Earthworms tunnel through soil, letting in air and water, and their waste makes the soil richer. They are tiny farmers' friends that keep soil healthy!

How does cutting trees harm soil?

Tree roots hold the soil in place. When too many trees are cut, rain and wind wash the good topsoil away. This is called soil erosion.

🤖 Vidi's Key Points

  • Soil grows our food and stores rain water.
  • It is home to worms and tiny creatures.
  • Trees hold soil in place — cutting them causes soil to wash away.

🧪 Try it at Home!

Be a Soil Scientist — shake up a soil jar and watch its layers settle! 🫙

🧺 You will need

  • A clear glass jar with a lid
  • A few handfuls of garden soil
  • Water
  • A magnifying glass (if you have one)

👣 Steps

  1. First, look at the soil closely. Can you spot bits of leaf, sand and tiny stones?
  2. Put the soil into the jar until it is about one-third full.
  3. Add water until the jar is nearly full, then put the lid on tightly.
  4. Shake the jar well, then place it down and DO NOT touch it.
  5. After a few hours, look — heavy sand and stones sink to the bottom, fine clay sits on top!
👀 Watch for: The soil settles into layers — heaviest at the bottom, finest on top. You can see that soil is a mix of different-sized bits of rock!
🛡️ Grown-up helper: Wash your hands well after touching soil. Ask a grown-up to help with the glass jar, and do not taste the soil or water.
