We eat food because our body needs it to live and grow. Food does three big jobs:

The good things in food that help our body are called nutrients. Different foods have different nutrients, so we must eat many kinds of food.

Be a Nutrition Detective — sort your meal into food groups and build a balanced plate! 🍽️

  • A paper plate or a sheet of paper
  • Crayons or pencils
  • A look at your real lunch or dinner

👣 Steps

  1. Look at the food on your plate at lunch or dinner.
  2. Name each food and decide its group: energy, body-building or protective.
  3. On paper, draw a balanced plate: some rice/roti, some dal/egg/milk, and lots of vegetables and a fruit.
  4. Add a glass of water beside your plate.
  5. Count the colours on your plate — more colours often means more healthy goodness!
👀 Watch for: You will notice a healthy meal has a little from each group and lots of colours. That is a balanced diet — exactly what your body loves!
🛡️ Grown-up helper: Only handle food a grown-up says is okay. Wash your hands before touching any food, and never taste anything unfamiliar.
