🌱What Is Energy?
Energy is the power to do work or to make things happen. Nothing can move, grow, glow or make sound without energy.
- 🏃 You use energy to run and play (you get it from food).
- 🚗 A car uses energy from fuel to move.
- 💡 A bulb uses electrical energy to give light.
We cannot see energy itself, but we can see what it DOES.
🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions
Where do humans get their energy?
From the food we eat! Our body breaks down food and turns it into energy, which we use to move, grow, think and stay warm.
Can we see energy?
Not directly — energy is invisible. But we see its effects: a glowing bulb (light energy), a moving fan (motion energy), or feel a warm stove (heat energy).
🤖 Vidi's Key Points
- Energy is the power to do work or make things happen.
- Nothing moves, grows or glows without energy.
- We cannot see energy, but we see what it does.
🐝Forms of Energy
Energy comes in many forms. Some common ones are:
- 💡 Light energy — from the Sun, a bulb or a flame.
- 🔥 Heat energy — from fire, a stove or the Sun.
- 🔊 Sound energy — from a drum, a bell or our voice.
- 🔌 Electrical energy — from a plug socket or a battery.
- 🏃 Movement (motion) energy — in anything that moves, like a running child or a moving car.
🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions
Does a battery have energy inside it?
Yes! A battery stores chemical energy. When you put it in a toy, that stored energy turns into electrical energy and then movement, light or sound.
Is a stretched rubber band energy?
Yes — a stretched band or a wound-up spring stores energy. Let it go and that stored energy turns into movement. Clever!
🤖 Vidi's Key Points
- Energy comes in many forms.
- Light, heat, sound, electrical and motion are common forms.
- Each form can do different kinds of work.
☀️The Sun: Our Energy Star
The Sun is the biggest and most important source of energy for our Earth. It gives us light and heat for free, every day.
- 🌱 Plants use the Sun's light to make food — and that feeds all animals.
- ☀️ The Sun's heat drives the water cycle, the wind and the weather.
- 🔋 We can even catch sunlight with solar panels to make electricity.
🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions
How does the Sun's energy reach us in our food?
Plants trap the Sun's light to make food. When we eat plants (or animals that ate plants), we take in that Sun energy. So the Sun feeds us all!
What is solar energy?
Solar energy is energy we get from the Sun. Solar panels soak up sunlight and turn it into electricity — a clean, free energy from our star.
🤖 Vidi's Key Points
- The Sun is Earth's biggest source of energy.
- Plants use sunlight to make food for all living things.
- Solar panels turn sunlight into electricity.
💧Energy Can Change Form
Energy can change from one form into another — this is one of its most useful tricks!
- 🔦 A torch: electrical energy → light energy.
- 🔔 A bell: movement energy → sound energy.
- 🍞 A toaster: electrical energy → heat energy.
- 🌱 A plant: light energy → stored food energy.
Energy is never lost — it just changes from one form into another.
🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions
When I rub my hands fast, why do they get warm?
Rubbing your hands is movement energy. The rubbing changes some of that movement energy into heat energy, so your hands feel warm!
Does energy ever disappear?
No — energy is never destroyed. It only changes form. The energy from your food becomes movement, heat and even sound when you run and laugh.
🤖 Vidi's Key Points
- Energy can change from one form to another.
- A torch: electrical → light; a bell: movement → sound.
- Energy is never lost, only changed.
🍃Saving Energy
Much of our electricity is made by burning fuels like coal, which can run out and cause pollution. So we must use energy wisely.
- 💡 Switch off lights, fans and the TV when not in use.
- ☀️ Use natural sunlight in the daytime.
- 🚲 Walk or cycle for short trips instead of using a vehicle.
- 🔋 Use solar, wind and water — these clean energies never run out.
🤔 Vidi's Wonder Questions
Why should we save electricity?
Much electricity comes from burning coal, which pollutes the air and will run out one day. Saving electricity saves fuel, money and keeps our air cleaner.
What is renewable energy?
Renewable energy comes from sources that never run out — like the Sun, wind and flowing water. Using them is clean and good for the planet.
🤖 Vidi's Key Points
- Much electricity comes from burning fuels that run out and pollute.
- Save energy: switch off, use daylight, walk or cycle.
- Sun, wind and water are clean energies that never run out.
🧪 Try it at Home!
Be an Energy Detective — hunt for the forms of energy hiding in your home! 🔎
🧺 You will need
- A notebook and pencil
- A walk around your home (with a grown-up)
👣 Steps
- Walk around your home and look for energy in action.
- Find one example of LIGHT energy (a bulb, the Sun through a window).
- Find HEAT energy (a stove, a warm iron — look, don't touch!).
- Find SOUND energy (a TV, a doorbell) and MOTION energy (a fan, a moving toy).
- Spot which things use electricity, and switch off any that are on but not needed!
