Everything around us is matter, and matter is found in three states:

  • 🧊 Solids keep their own shape (ice, wood, stone).
  • 💧 Liquids flow and take the shape of their container (water, milk).
  • 💨 Gases spread out to fill all the space (air, steam).

Tiny invisible pieces called particles make up all matter. In a solid they are packed tight; in a liquid they are looser; in a gas they spread far apart.

Why does a solid keep its shape but a gas does not?

In a solid, the tiny particles are packed tightly and cannot move much, so it keeps its shape. In a gas, particles are far apart and move freely, so a gas spreads out everywhere.

Is steam really the same as ice?

Yes! Ice, liquid water and steam are all made of the very same water — just with the particles packed differently. Heat or cold changes which state it is in.

Vidi wonders: Leave an ice cream in the sun and it turns runny. Put water in the freezer and it turns hard. What is happening?

Heating and cooling can change matter from one state to another:

  • 🔥 Melting — heat changes a SOLID into a LIQUID (ice → water, butter melts).
  • ❄️ Freezing — cooling changes a LIQUID into a SOLID (water → ice).

Melting and freezing are opposites. The same thing can melt and freeze again and again!

Do all solids melt at the same heat?

No! Ice melts in gentle warmth, but chocolate melts a bit slower, and metal needs a huge amount of heat to melt. Different solids melt at different temperatures.

Is freezing the opposite of melting?

Yes! Melting turns a solid into a liquid with heat; freezing turns a liquid into a solid with cold. They are opposite changes.

Water can change between liquid and gas too:

  • ☁️ Condensation — cooling changes a GAS back into a LIQUID (vapour → water drops). This makes a cold bottle wet outside.

Why do wet clothes dry faster in the sun?

The Sun's heat speeds up evaporation, turning the water in the clothes into vapour quickly. More heat and breeze mean faster drying.

Why does a cold glass 'sweat' on a hot day?

Warm water vapour in the air touches the cold glass, cools down, and condenses into tiny water drops on the outside. That is condensation.

💧Mixing and Dissolving

Vidi wonders: Stir sugar into water and it seems to vanish. Stir in sand and it just sinks. What is the difference?

When we mix things into water, two things can happen:

  • 🍚 Some things dissolve — they mix in completely and seem to disappear (sugar, salt, coffee). The water becomes a clear mixture called a solution.
  • 🏖️ Some things do not dissolve — they stay separate and sink or float (sand, oil, chalk).

If sugar disappears in water, is it gone?

No — it is still there, just broken into pieces too tiny to see, spread through the water. Taste it and the water is sweet! That is dissolving.

How can I make sugar dissolve faster?

Use warm water and stir it! Heat and stirring help the sugar break apart and mix into the water much more quickly.

Changes in matter come in two kinds:

  • 🔄 Reversible changes can be undone — you get the original thing back. (Melting ice, freezing water, dissolving sugar.)
  • ➡️ Irreversible changes cannot be undone — a brand new thing is made. (Cooking an egg, burning paper, baking a cake.)

Why can't a cooked egg become raw again?

Cooking changes the egg into something completely new — there is no way to turn it back. That makes cooking an irreversible change.

Is melting chocolate reversible?

Yes! Melted chocolate can be cooled to become solid chocolate again. Only the shape changed, not what it is made of — so it is reversible.

  • Two equal spoons of sugar
  • A spoon for stirring

👣 Steps

  1. Fill one glass with warm water and one with cold water.
  2. Add one spoon of sugar to each glass at the same time.
  3. Stir both the same number of times and watch closely.
  4. Which glass's sugar disappears (dissolves) faster?
  5. Bonus: try adding sand to a glass — does it dissolve?
