${\tan ^{ - 1}}\sqrt 3 - {\cot ^{ - 1}}( - \sqrt 3 ) = {\tan ^{ - 1}}\sqrt 3 - (\pi - {\cot ^{ - 1}}\sqrt 3 )$

$= {\tan ^{ - 1}}\sqrt 3 - \pi + {\cot ^{ - 1}}\sqrt 3 = \frac{\pi }{3} - \pi + \frac{\pi }{6} = \frac{\pi }{2} - \pi = - \frac{\pi }{2}.$
