Longer and Shorter (Length)

Length tells us how long something is. We compare lengths with words like longer, shorter, taller and tallest. A pencil is shorter than a broom. An elephant is taller than a dog.

Example 1: Which is longer — a pencil or a bus?
A bus is much longer than a pencil.
Example 2: Who is taller — a baby or a grown-up?
A grown-up is taller.

Heavier and Lighter (Weight)

Weight tells us how heavy something is. We use words like heavier and lighter. A stone is heavier than a feather. A school bag full of books is heavier than an empty one.

Example 1: Which is heavier — a feather or a brick?
A brick is heavier.
Example 2: Which is lighter — a balloon or a water bottle?
A balloon is lighter.

Holds More and Less (Capacity)

Capacity tells us how much a container can hold. We use words like holds more and holds less. A bucket holds more water than a cup. A spoon holds less than a glass.

A spoon holds less.
