IMOClass 3 › Division

Division

Equal Sharing & Division Facts

Division means making equal groups. Sharing 24 sweets among 6 children gives 24 ÷ 6 = 4 each. Division can also tell how many groups: 24 ÷ 4 = 6 groups of four.

Every multiplication fact gives a division fact. Since 6 × 4 = 24, we know 24 ÷ 6 = 4 and 24 ÷ 4 = 6. Knowing tables 2 to 10 makes division quick.

Example 1: Share 35 pencils among 5 children equally.
35 ÷ 5 = 7 pencils each.
Example 2: How many groups of 6 are in 24?
24 ÷ 6 = 4 groups.
Quick recap
  • Division makes equal groups or finds the number of groups.
  • Each times-table fact gives a division fact.
✓ Quick check
What is 48 ÷ 8?
8 × 6 = 48, so 48 ÷ 8 = 6.
What is 63 ÷ 9?
9 × 7 = 63, so 63 ÷ 9 = 7.

Dividend, Divisor, Quotient, Remainder

In a division, the number being divided is the dividend, the number we divide by is the divisor, the answer is the quotient, and anything left over is the remainder.

For 47 ÷ 5: 5 × 9 = 45, so the quotient is 9 and the remainder is 2 (because 47 − 45 = 2). The remainder is always smaller than the divisor.

Example 1: In 20 ÷ 4 = 5, name the dividend, divisor and quotient.
Dividend = 20, divisor = 4, quotient = 5.
Example 2: Divide 47 ÷ 5 and give the remainder.
5 × 9 = 45, so quotient 9 and remainder 2.
Quick recap
  • Dividend ÷ divisor = quotient, with a remainder left over.
  • The remainder is always smaller than the divisor.
✓ Quick check
What is 56 ÷ 7?
7 × 8 = 56, so 56 ÷ 7 = 8.
What is the remainder when 38 is divided by 4?
4 × 9 = 36, and 38 − 36 = 2, so the remainder is 2.

Dividing Larger Numbers & Checking

To divide a 3-digit number by a 1-digit number, divide each place from the left. For 936 ÷ 3: 9 ÷ 3 = 3, 3 ÷ 3 = 1, 6 ÷ 3 = 2, so the quotient is 312.

We can check division using multiplication: quotient × divisor (+ remainder) should give the dividend. For 936 ÷ 3 = 312, check 312 × 3 = 936.

Example 1: Divide 936 ÷ 3.
936 ÷ 3 = 312. Check: 312 × 3 = 936.
Example 2: Divide 425 ÷ 5.
425 ÷ 5 = 85. Check: 85 × 5 = 425.
Quick recap
  • Divide place by place from the left.
  • Check: quotient × divisor (+ remainder) = dividend.
✓ Quick check
What is 484 ÷ 4?
4 ÷ 4 = 1, 8 ÷ 4 = 2, 4 ÷ 4 = 1 → 121.
Is 72 ÷ 8 = 9 correct?
Check: 9 × 8 = 72, so it is correct.
