Chapter 5 · English Grammar

Gap Filling & Cloze Tests

Advanced ⏱ 40–50 minutes 🎓 Grade 9

What you will be able to do

  • Fill grammatical gaps with the correct word
  • Choose articles, prepositions and determiners from context
  • Supply the correct verb form (tense and agreement)
  • Read a whole passage before filling cloze gaps
  • Use elimination and collocation strategies

1 Quick Introduction

English

A gap-filling exercise removes a word and asks you to supply it; a cloze test does the same across a whole passage, so each answer must fit the flow, not just one sentence. The skill is to read first, then use grammar clues and word partnerships (collocations) to choose the one word that fits perfectly.

हिन्दी

gap-filling में एक शब्द हटाकर पूछा जाता है; cloze test पूरे अनुच्छेद में यही करता है, इसलिए हर उत्तर को केवल एक वाक्य नहीं, बल्कि प्रवाह में फिट होना चाहिए। कौशल है — पहले पढ़ें, फिर व्याकरण-संकेतों और शब्द-संगति (collocations) से वह एक शब्द चुनें जो पूरी तरह सटीक बैठे।

2 A Real-Life Situation

Imagine this

You fill a form's sentence:

Gap: I have lived in Pune ___ 2015 and work ___ a software company.

Fill:since 2015 and work for/at a software company.

Why this form? 'since' fits a point in time, and 'for/at' fits the workplace. Each blank has a grammatical clue around it — that's exactly how gap-filling and cloze questions are solved.

3 The Grammar Rule

Rule & Formula
Gap typeClue to useExample
Articlesound + specific?___ apple → an
Prepositioncollocationgood ___ → at
Verbtense + agreementhe ___ daily → goes
Determinercountable?___ water → much/some
Connectorlogic of the linktired, ___ he slept → so
Read whole passage → find the grammar clue → choose & check the fit
She is good ___ (at) painting and has ___ (a) natural talent.

4 Grammar-Based Gap Filling

Most gaps test a specific grammar point. Identify which one, then apply the rule:

  • Articles: a/an by sound; 'the' for something specific or unique.
  • Prepositions: rely on collocations — good at, afraid of, married to, depend on.
  • Verbs: match the tense to signal words and the verb to its subject.
  • Determiners: much/many, some/any, few/little by countability and sentence type.
  • Modals: choose by meaning — ability, obligation, possibility, advice.

Look at the words on both sides of the blank; they almost always reveal the answer.

Visual — Grammar-Based Gap Filling
Look at BOTH sides of the blankShe is good [ ___ ] painting.'good' + gerund → preposition 'at'
1
Worked Example
Fill: He has been waiting ___ an hour.
Solution

for — a duration takes 'for'.

2
Worked Example
Fill: She ___ (go) to school every day.
Solution

goes — habitual present, third-person singular.

Key Points

  • Identify the grammar point each gap tests
  • Articles by sound; prepositions by collocation; verbs by tense + agreement
  • Read the words on both sides of the blank for clues

5 Cloze Tests — Strategy

A cloze passage has several blanks; the answers connect into one coherent text. Strategy:

  1. Read the whole passage first to grasp the topic and tone.
  2. For each gap, decide the kind of word needed (article, verb, connector…).
  3. Use grammatical consistency — keep the tense and agreement steady across the passage.
  4. Use collocation and context — pick the word that partners naturally with its neighbours.
  5. Eliminate options that don't fit grammatically, then those that don't fit the meaning.
  6. Re-read with your answers to check the flow.

In multiple-choice cloze, the wrong options are often grammatically possible but make poor sense — so always test meaning, not just grammar.

1
Worked Example
Cloze: Trees give us shade. ___ , they clean the air. (connector)
Solution

Moreover / Also / Besides — a connector of addition fits the second benefit.

2
Worked Example
Cloze: He worked hard; ___ , he failed. (connector)
Solution

however / nevertheless — a contrast connector fits the surprising result.

Key Points

  • Read the entire passage before filling any gap
  • Keep tense and agreement consistent throughout
  • Use collocation, context and elimination; re-read to check flow
