Chapter 2 · English Grammar

Wishes & Hypothetical Structures

Advanced ⏱ 40–50 minutes 🎓 Grade 9

What you will be able to do

  • Use 'wish' for present, past and future situations
  • Use 'if only' for strong wishes and regrets
  • Use 'it's (high) time' + past tense
  • Use 'would rather' for preferences
  • Use 'as if / as though' for unreal comparisons

1 Quick Introduction

English

Hypothetical language lets us talk about things that are not real — wishes, regrets, and imagined situations. The surprising rule is that English uses past tenses to talk about the present in these structures: "I wish I were taller" is about now, not the past. Master this 'unreal past' and you unlock elegant, expressive English.

2 A Real-Life Situation

Imagine this

A moment of reflection:

You: I wish I knew the answer. If only I had studied harder! It's high time I started revising.

Why this form? Three regrets, three patterns — a present wish (wish + past), a past regret (if only + past perfect), and an overdue action (it's high time + past). All use a past tense to talk about now or recent time. That is the hallmark of hypothetical English.

3 The Grammar Rule

Rule & Formula
StructureFormMeaning
wish (present)wish + pastI wish I were rich.
wish (past)wish + past perfectI wish I had gone.
wish (future)wish + wouldI wish it would stop.
it's (high) time+ pastIt's time we left.
would rather+ base / + pastI'd rather stay / I'd rather you stayed.
Unreal present → past tense · Unreal past → past perfect
I wish I knew (now); I wish I had known (then); I'd rather you came tomorrow.

4 Wish & If Only

wish expresses a desire for a different reality. The tense shows the time:

  • Present/general wish → wish + past simple: I wish I had more time. (Use 'were' for all subjects: I wish I were taller.)
  • Past regret → wish + past perfect: I wish I had listened to you.
  • Annoyance / desire for change → wish + would + base verb: I wish you would stop shouting. (used for another person's behaviour, not your own)

if only works exactly like 'wish' but is stronger and more emotional: If only I were younger! If only I had known!

Visual — Wish & If Only
wish + PASTpresent wish (now)wish + PAST PERFECTpast regretwish + WOULDannoyance / change
1
Worked Example
Complete: I wish I ___ (be) taller.
Solution

were — present wish uses the past; 'were' for all subjects.

2
Worked Example
Complete: If only she ___ (tell) me earlier! (regret)
Solution

had told — past regret uses the past perfect.

Key Points

  • Present wish → wish + past simple (were for all subjects)
  • Past regret → wish + past perfect
  • wish + would = annoyance / desire for another's change

5 It's (High) Time, Would Rather & As If/As Though

It's (high) time means something is overdue. It is followed by the past tense (with a present meaning):

  • It's time we left. (= we should leave now)
  • It's high time you apologised.

would rather shows preference:

  • Own action → would rather + base verb: I'd rather stay home.
  • Someone else's action → would rather + past tense: I'd rather you came tomorrow.

as if / as though introduces an unreal comparison; use the past for something untrue now:

  • She acts as if she owned the place. (she doesn't)
  • He talks as though he knew everything.
1
Worked Example
Complete: It's high time you ___ (start) studying.
Solution

started — 'it's high time' takes the past tense.

2
Worked Example
Complete: He behaves as if he ___ (be) the boss.
Solution

were — an unreal comparison uses the past ('were' for all subjects).

Key Points

  • It's (high) time + past tense (overdue, present meaning)
  • would rather + base (own action) / + past (another's action)
  • as if/as though + past tense for something untrue now

10 Reading Practice

Standing on the empty platform, Aman sighed. "I wish I had caught that train," he thought. "If only I were faster!" He checked his watch. "It's high time I bought a better one," he muttered. A stranger nearby was talking loudly, as if he owned the whole station. Aman would rather have waited in silence.

Comprehension Questions
  1. Identify a past regret and explain its form.
  2. Why is 'were' used in 'If only I were faster'?
  3. Explain 'as if he owned the whole station'.
Answer Key
  1. "I wish I had caught that train" — wish + past perfect for a past regret.
  2. It is a present (unreal) wish, which takes the past — 'were' for all subjects.
  3. An unreal comparison: he does not own it, so the past 'owned' is used after 'as if'.
