GMAT Vocabulary — Essential Word List & Practice

The GMAT never asks you to define a word — it just quietly assumes you know it, in the middle of a dense business passage.

Free with a Vidaara account (the account is free too — it saves your progress so the quiz can re-test the words you miss).

GMAT Verbal does not test vocabulary directly, which fools many candidates into skipping it. Then Reading Comprehension serves a passage on monetary policy full of words like mitigate, proliferation and tenuous, and Critical Reasoning turns on the difference between imply and infer. Our GMAT track weights C2 words at 70% and C1 at 30% — the register of the business and academic prose the exam is built from.

Every word comes with meaning, usage example, synonyms and antonyms, and the adaptive quiz recycles the ones you miss. Like the GRE track, GMAT practice is English-only — the exam gives you no translations, so neither do we.

How to study GMAT vocabulary — what actually works

  • Focus on argument vocabulary — undermine, bolster, presuppose, concede — the working language of Critical Reasoning.
  • Learn the business-economics register: words like austerity, consolidation and volatility carry precise meanings the GMAT exploits.
  • Watch connector words (notwithstanding, albeit, insofar as); they control passage logic and RC answer traps.
  • Ten focused minutes a day beats a weekend binge — the adaptive quiz schedules your weak words for you.

GMAT vocabulary — frequently asked questions

Does the GMAT test vocabulary directly?

No — there are no definition questions. But Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning passages assume comfortable command of C1–C2 academic and business vocabulary, and a single misread word like "concede" or "undermine" can flip an answer.

How is GMAT vocabulary different from GRE vocabulary?

GRE words skew literary and abstract (Text Completion tests them directly); GMAT words skew analytical and economic, appearing inside arguments and business passages. This course weights the GMAT mix at 70% C2 / 30% C1 with a business-register emphasis.

Is this GMAT vocabulary course free?

Yes — word lists are free to browse, and the adaptive builder and tests are free with a Vidaara account.

How many words should I learn per day for GMAT?

10–15 new words a day with daily review is sustainable and compounds fast: that is 300–450 words a month, enough to cover the high-frequency GMAT band in a normal 2–3 month prep window.
