IELTS Vocabulary — Essential Words for Band 7+
A quarter of your Writing and Speaking band is Lexical Resource — vocabulary is not optional at Band 7.
Free with a Vidaara account (the account is free too — it saves your progress so the quiz can re-test the words you miss).
IELTS scores Lexical Resource as one of four equal criteria in both Writing and Speaking: examiners explicitly reward "less common vocabulary" used naturally and penalise repetition. The difference between Band 6 ("adequate vocabulary") and Band 7+ ("uses less common items with some awareness of style and collocation") is precisely the B2-to-C1 step this course trains — our IELTS track weights words 40% B2 and 60% C1.
Each word comes with English and Hindi meanings, pronunciation, an example sentence, synonyms and antonyms; the adaptive quiz locks in what you miss. Then put the words to work in our full IELTS course — 120 free practice tests across Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.

How to study IELTS vocabulary — what actually works
- Learn collocations, not lone words — examiners reward "heavy traffic" and "raise concerns", not rare words forced into place.
- Build topic clusters (environment, education, health, technology): the same Writing Task 2 themes recur for a reason.
- Use each new word once in a practice essay or speaking answer within 48 hours — production is what Lexical Resource measures.
- Precision beats rarity: one accurate C1 word outscores three misused C2 words every time.
IELTS vocabulary — frequently asked questions
How much vocabulary do I need for IELTS Band 7?
Roughly comfortable command of B2 plus a working layer of C1 vocabulary — used accurately. Band descriptors reward "less common lexical items" with correct collocation, which is exactly the 40% B2 / 60% C1 mix this course teaches.
Is vocabulary marked separately in IELTS?
Yes — Lexical Resource is one of the four equally weighted criteria in both Writing and Speaking, so vocabulary directly controls 25% of those band scores, and it strongly affects Reading and Listening speed too.
Does this IELTS word list include Hindi meanings?
Yes. Every word has English and Hindi meanings, and you can keep Hindi visible during practice and switch it off in mock-test mode.
Should I use big words in IELTS Writing to score higher?
No — misused rare words lower your score. Examiners reward precise, natural usage and correct collocation. Learn fewer words more deeply, and practise producing them in essays and speaking answers.
