Gap Filling, Editing & Transformation
What you will be able to do
- Solve gap-filling items (verbs, articles, prepositions, modals)
- Do editing tasks: one error per line, with corrections
- Complete omission exercises (missing words)
- Transform sentences as directed (voice, narration, 'begin with…')
- Apply the standard CBSE answer format
1 Quick Introduction
Three question types appear in every CBSE grammar section: gap filling, editing, and transformation/rewriting. They are the highest-scoring, most predictable marks in the paper — if you know the format. This chapter drills all three so you answer them fast and correctly under time pressure.
हर CBSE grammar खंड में तीन प्रकार के प्रश्न आते हैं: gap filling, editing, और transformation/rewriting। यदि format आता है तो ये पेपर के सबसे अधिक अंक देने वाले, सबसे पूर्वानुमेय प्रश्न हैं। यह अध्याय तीनों का अभ्यास कराता है ताकि आप समय-दबाव में तेज़ी और शुद्धता से उत्तर दें।
2 A Real-Life Situation
A typical editing line and its answer format:
Line: Many student fails because they not revise.
Answer: student → students; not → do not (or 'don't')
3 The Grammar Rule
| Type | What to do |
|---|---|
| Gap filling | supply the right word (verb/article/prep/modal) |
| Editing | one error per line → write incorrect + correct |
| Omission | a word is missing → supply it with the words around it |
| Transformation | rewrite as directed, keeping the meaning |
4 Gap Filling & Editing
Gap filling usually tests verbs (tense/form), articles, prepositions, conjunctions, determiners and modals. Use the words on both sides of the blank as clues, and keep the passage consistent.
Editing (one error per line): the standard CBSE format gives a passage where each line has exactly one mistake. You write the incorrect word and the correct word, like this:
| Incorrect | Correct |
|---|---|
| go | goes |
| a | an |
Omission tasks mark a missing word with a caret; you supply the missing word and the words on either side.
at … a — 'good at'; 'a natural talent'.
don't → doesn't (and likes → like): 'He doesn't like coffee.'
Key Points
- Gap filling tests verbs, articles, prepositions, determiners, modals
- Editing = one error per line; write incorrect + correct word
- Omission = supply the missing word with its neighbours
5 Transformation / Rewriting (CBSE Format)
Transformation asks you to rewrite a sentence as directed, keeping the meaning. Common directions:
- Combine two sentences: He was tired. He kept working. → Though he was tired, he kept working.
- Change the voice: She wrote a letter. → A letter was written by her.
- Change the narration: He said, "I am busy." → He said that he was busy.
- Begin with a given word: 'Rewrite beginning with "No sooner…"' or 'Begin with "Hardly…"'.
- Rewrite using a given word (e.g. 'too', 'so', 'unless').
Always read the instruction carefully — the marks are for following the exact direction while preserving the meaning.
He is too weak to walk.
No sooner had he arrived than it started to rain.
Key Points
- Directions: combine, change voice, change narration, begin with…, use a word
- Keep the meaning; follow the exact instruction
- 'No sooner … than', 'Hardly … when' need inversion
