  • Solve grammar-based and vocabulary-based cloze gaps
  • Use context, collocation and connectors to choose words
  • Maintain grammatical consistency across the passage
  • Apply a fast, reliable cloze strategy

1 Quick Introduction

English

A cloze test is a passage with several blanks; each answer must fit not just its sentence but the flow of the whole text. Because the gaps are connected, the secret is to read the entire passage first, grasp the theme, and then fill each blank using grammar, collocation and the logic of the surrounding ideas.

हिन्दी

cloze test कई रिक्त-स्थानों वाला अनुच्छेद है; हर उत्तर को केवल अपने वाक्य में नहीं, बल्कि पूरे पाठ के प्रवाह में फिट होना चाहिए। चूँकि gaps जुड़े होते हैं, रहस्य है पहले पूरा अनुच्छेद पढ़ना, विषय समझना, और फिर हर blank को व्याकरण, collocation और आसपास के विचारों के तर्क से भरना।

2 A Real-Life Situation

Imagine this

A two-gap stretch of a cloze passage:

Text: Reading widens the mind. (1)___ , it improves vocabulary. (2)___ many people today prefer screens.
(1) Moreover (2) However

Why this form? Gap 1 adds a second benefit (Moreover); gap 2 turns to a contrast (However). Each connector flows from the relationship between the sentences — which only the whole-passage reading reveals.

3 The Grammar Rule

Rule & Formula
Cloze typeFocus
Grammar-basedverbs, prepositions, articles, connectors
Vocabulary-basedmeaning, tone, collocation
Mixedboth at once
Read whole passage → fill easy gaps → use context for the rest → re-read to check flow
Trees clean the air; ___, they give shade. → moreover (addition).

4 Cloze Strategy

Follow this reliable method:

  1. Read the entire passage once for the topic and tone — don't fill yet.
  2. Fill the easy gaps first (clear grammar or obvious words) to build momentum and context.
  3. For each gap, decide the kind of word needed (verb / connector / adjective).
  4. Use collocation and context to choose; check the words just before and after.
  5. Keep grammatical and logical consistency — tense, agreement and tone steady across the passage.
  6. Re-read with your answers to confirm the whole passage flows.

In multiple-choice cloze, several options may be grammatically possible — so always test meaning, not just grammar.

Visual — Cloze Strategy
1 read allfirst2 easy gapsfirst3 context+ collocation4 consistency5 re-read
1
Worked Example
Cloze gap (grammar): He has lived here ___ ten years.
Solution

for — a duration takes 'for'.

2
Worked Example
Cloze gap (vocabulary): The scientist made a ___ discovery that changed medicine.
Solution

groundbreaking / remarkable — a strong positive word fits 'changed medicine'.

Key Points

  • Read the whole passage first; fill easy gaps to build context
  • Decide the word type, then use collocation and context
  • Keep tense/agreement/tone consistent; re-read to check flow

5 Grammar, Vocabulary & Mixed Cloze

Grammar-based cloze tests structure: tenses, prepositions, articles, connectors, modals. The clue is always nearby grammar.

Vocabulary-based cloze tests word choice: the right word for the meaning, tone and collocation (e.g. 'heavy rain', 'make a decision', 'a serious problem').

Mixed cloze blends both, and is the most common in major exams. Across all three:

  • Use connectors to track the logic (addition, contrast, result).
  • Watch collocations — natural pairings often decide the answer.
  • Maintain a single tense and tone unless the passage clearly shifts.

When stuck, eliminate: cut options that break grammar, then those that don't fit the meaning, and choose what remains.

1
Worked Example
Mixed cloze: Pollution is rising; ___ , governments are ___ action.
Solution

therefore … taking — result connector + collocation 'take action'.

2
Worked Example
Vocabulary cloze: The team made a strong ___ to win. (effort / try / attempt)
Solution

effort — collocation 'make an effort'.

Key Points

  • Grammar cloze: tenses, prepositions, articles, connectors, modals
  • Vocabulary cloze: meaning, tone, collocation
  • Mixed cloze blends both — track logic and pairings, keep tense/tone steady
