What is a Quadrilateral?

A quadrilateral is a polygon with 4 sides and 4 angles.

Worked Example

A shape has 2 pairs of parallel sides and 4 right angles. What is it?

Solution
  • 2 pairs of parallel sides = parallelogram
  • 4 right angles = rectangle
  • Could also be square if sides equal, but rectangle is correct
  • Answer: Rectangle

Draw the hierarchy from widest to narrowest: square, quadrilateral, rectangle, parallelogram

Solution
  • Widest: Quadrilateral
  • Then: Parallelogram
  • Then: Rectangle
  • Narrowest: Square
  • Answer: Quadrilateral → Parallelogram → Rectangle → Square

Solution
  • Definition of trapezoid: exactly 1 pair of parallel sides
  • Answer: 1 pair
