Direction Sense

AreaArrangement & Relations DifficultyEasy–Moderate SSC weightage2–3 questions (Tier 1 & 2)

Direction questions track a person walking and turning, then ask the final direction or the straight-line distance from the start. Always draw the path on a North-up grid: North is up, East is right. Mark each leg with its length, apply left/right turns relative to the current facing, and the diagram answers everything. For distance between start and end, the legs usually form a right triangle — use Pythagoras.

Topics

⚡ SSC shortcuts & speed methods

The fastest ways to crack this chapter under time pressure — the techniques that separate a 95+ percentiler from the rest.

  • Always draw on a North-up grid (N up, E right).
  • Right turn = clockwise (N→E→S→W); left = anticlockwise.
  • Net distance = √(net EW² + net NS²); opposite legs cancel.
  • Shadow is opposite the sun: morning → West, evening → East.
  • Coded directions just rotate the compass — substitute everywhere.

⚠️ Common mistakes & traps

SSC is designed so that careless errors here cost you marks. Internalise each trap before the exam.

  • Turning the wrong way (mixing clockwise/anticlockwise).
  • Adding all leg lengths instead of netting opposite directions.
  • Getting shadow direction backwards (it is opposite the sun).
  • Applying a direction code to only part of the problem.

📈 SSC exam insight & PYQ analysis

SSC asks a turns item and a Pythagoras-distance item nearly every Tier; coded directions and shadows appear in Tier 2. The North-up sketch solves all of them.

📌 Quick revision

Draw every path on a North-up grid, update facing through each turn (right = clockwise), and find start-to-end distance with √(net EW² + net NS²). Shadows fall opposite the sun, and coded directions are just a rotated compass applied consistently.
