Venn Diagrams • Topic 2 of 4
Logical Venn (Items)
These name three or four items and ask for the matching figure. The skill is judging real-world containment and overlap. Watch for items that look related but are disjoint (e.g., 'Even numbers, Odd numbers, Numbers' → two separate inside one).
Judge by real-world meaning
Read each item literally and ask whether memberships can overlap. Common patterns SSC tests:
| Items | Correct diagram |
|---|---|
| Apple, Fruit, Food | concentric (Apple ⊂ Fruit ⊂ Food) |
| Even numbers, Prime numbers, Numbers | Evens & Primes overlap only at 2, both inside Numbers |
| Vowels, Consonants, Letters | two separate circles inside one |
| Doctor, Engineer, Human | two separate circles inside Human |
| Teacher, Man, Player | three overlapping circles |
Trap. Categories that sound paired are often disjoint — Even vs Odd numbers never overlap, Men vs Women never overlap. Don't draw an overlap unless a single thing could really be in both.
✅ Solved examples
1. Even numbers, Prime numbers, Numbers — diagram?
Evens and Primes overlap only at 2; both inside Numbers.
2. Apple, Fruit, Vegetable — diagram?
Apple inside Fruit; Vegetable separate from both.
3. Furniture, Table, Chair — diagram?
Table and Chair separate, both inside Furniture.
4. Square, Rectangle, Polygon — diagram?
Square inside Rectangle inside Polygon (nested).
✏️ Practice — try these, take hints as needed
1. Mango, Fruit, Food — diagram?
Nested.
—
—
Mango ⊂ Fruit ⊂ Food
2. Doctor, Engineer, Human — diagram?
Doctor & Engineer separate, inside Human.
—
—
Two separate inside one
3. Vowels, Consonants, Letters?
Two separate inside one.
—
—
Vowels & Consonants disjoint, inside Letters
4. Author, Poet, Person?
Author & Poet may overlap, inside Person.
—
—
Two overlapping inside one
5. Cricket, Game, Football?
Cricket & Football separate, inside Game.
—
—
Two separate inside one

Region logic & counting
| One contains another | e.g. all dogs are animals → Dogs inside Animals |
|---|---|
| Partial overlap | some shared, some not → intersecting circles |
| Disjoint | nothing shared → separate circles |
| Two-set union | |A∪B| = |A| + |B| − |A∩B| |
| Only A | |A| − |A∩B| (subtract the overlap) |
