Ranking & Seating Arrangement

AreaArrangement & Relations DifficultyEasy–Moderate SSC weightage3–5 questions (Tier 1 & 2)

Two related skills: positional ranking (a person's place from the left/right or top/bottom, and the total count) and seating arrangement (placing people in a row or circle from clues). Ranking is a formula game; arrangement is a drawing game. For both, the cardinal rule is to commit positions to paper and never assume a fact the clues did not give.

⚡ SSC shortcuts & speed methods

The fastest ways to crack this chapter under time pressure — the techniques that separate a 95+ percentiler from the rest.

  • Total = left-rank + right-rank − 1 (subtract the double count).
  • Rank from the other end = Total − rank + 1.
  • People between two positions = |difference| − 1.
  • Circle facing centre: left = clockwise, right = anticlockwise.
  • Chain all comparisons into one ordered line before reading off.

⚠️ Common mistakes & traps

SSC is designed so that careless errors here cost you marks. Internalise each trap before the exam.

  • Forgetting to subtract 1 in the total-from-two-ranks formula.
  • Using intuitive left/right in a circle (it flips when facing centre).
  • Assuming a facing direction the question did not state.
  • Counting the endpoints when finding "people between".

📈 SSC exam insight & PYQ analysis

SSC asks a ranking-formula item every Tier-1 set and a linear/circular arrangement in Tier 2. The total = L + R − 1 formula alone earns easy marks.

📌 Quick revision

Ranking is formulas: Total = L + R − 1, other-end rank = Total − rank + 1, between = |diff| − 1. Arrangement is drawing: fix the firmest clue first, mind the facing (circle-facing-centre flips left/right), and chain comparisons into one order. Never assume an unstated direction.
