The skill is testing the gaps systematically: first differences, then second differences, then ratios, then patterns on alternate terms. SSC favours arithmetic steps, multiplication chains, squares/cubes, and prime sequences. Write the differences under the numbers — most series confess immediately.

The fastest ways to crack this chapter under time pressure — the techniques that separate a 95+ percentiler from the rest.

  • Write first differences under the terms; constant = AP, growing = check 2nd differences.
  • If terms grow fast, test a constant ratio (GP).
