Venn Diagrams
Venn-diagram questions come in two flavours. The logical type asks which diagram best shows the relation between given groups (e.g., Dogs, Animals, Cats). The numerical type gives a diagram with numbers in each region and asks for a count — how many are in exactly one set, in both, in none. Decide first whether groups are fully contained, overlapping, or separate; for counts, work region by region and never double-count the overlap.

⚡ SSC shortcuts & speed methods
The fastest ways to crack this chapter under time pressure — the techniques that separate a 95+ percentiler from the rest.
- Ask "can one thing be in both groups?" — never ⇒ separate circles.
- |A∪B| = |A| + |B| − |A∩B|; never double-count the overlap.
- "Only A" = |A| − overlap(s).
- For three sets, fill from the centre outward.
- Nested real-world categories (India⊂Asia⊂World) = concentric circles.
⚠️ Common mistakes & traps
SSC is designed so that careless errors here cost you marks. Internalise each trap before the exam.
- Double-counting the intersection in a union.
- Treating overlapping groups as separate (or vice versa).
- Forgetting the "none/outside" region in a total.
- In three-set counts, not subtracting the centre from pair totals.

Region logic & counting
| One contains another | e.g. all dogs are animals → Dogs inside Animals |
|---|---|
| Partial overlap | some shared, some not → intersecting circles |
| Disjoint | nothing shared → separate circles |
| Two-set union | |A∪B| = |A| + |B| − |A∩B| |
| Only A | |A| − |A∩B| (subtract the overlap) |
