Data Interpretation is arithmetic with a chart attached: tables, bar graphs, pie charts and line graphs. There is no new theory — every question is a percentage, ratio, average or total in disguise. The marks go to whoever reads the chart accurately and computes fast, so the skills from the percentage, ratio and average chapters pay off directly. The discipline that wins: read exactly what is asked, pull only the numbers you need, and approximate when the options are far apart.

⚡ SSC shortcuts & speed methods

The fastest ways to crack this chapter under time pressure — the techniques that separate a 95+ percentiler from the rest.

  • DI is just percentage/ratio/average — no new theory.
  • Percent to pie angle: multiply by 3.6; angle to percent: divide by 3.6.
  • Percent change always divides by the EARLIER value.
  • Approximate when options are far apart; compute exactly only when they are close.
  • Write intermediate totals down in multi-step caselets.

⚠️ Common mistakes & traps

SSC is designed so that careless errors here cost you marks. Internalise each trap before the exam.

  • Dividing by the new value instead of the old in percent change.
  • Misreading the axis scale or the units in the caption.
  • Using the wrong grand total for a pie slice.
  • Computing every value when the question asks for only one.
