Percentage Basics & Conversions

Percent means per hundred. Convert between percent, fraction and decimal fluently: 50% = 1/2 = 0.5, 33.33% = 1/3, 12.5% = 1/8, 16.66% = 1/6, 6.25% = 1/16. Memorising these fraction equivalents turns 'find 37.5% of 240' into '3/8 of 240 = 90' instantly. To find what percent A is of B, compute A/B x 100.

1. Find 62.5% of 240.
62.5% = 5/8. (5/8) x 240 = 150.
2. What percent of 80 is 20?
(20/80) x 100 = 25%.
3. Convert 0.045 to a percentage.
0.045 x 100 = 4.5%.
4. If 15% of a number is 45, find the number.
15% -> 45, so 1% -> 3, number = 300.
