Ratio, Proportion & Partnership
A ratio compares two quantities of the same kind; a proportion says two ratios are equal. The single most useful idea is the common multiplier: if a:b = 3:4, write the quantities as 3x and 4x, and one equation fixes x. Partnership is just ratio applied to money and time — profit divides in the ratio of (capital x months). This chapter builds the multiplier habit that also powers mixtures, ages and partnership.

⚡ SSC shortcuts & speed methods
The fastest ways to crack this chapter under time pressure — the techniques that separate a 95+ percentiler from the rest.
- Always introduce a common multiplier x and form one equation.
- Combine a:b and b:c by scaling b to its LCM.
- Partnership: reduce each partner to capital x months, then share in that ratio.
- Same time invested -> profit splits in the ratio of capitals.
⚠️ Common mistakes & traps
SSC is designed so that careless errors here cost you marks. Internalise each trap before the exam.
- Adding ratio terms without multiplying by x first.
- Forgetting to scale the common term when chaining a:b and b:c.
- Using capital only (ignoring time) in partnership profit sharing.
- Treating a:b = c:d as a + d = b + c instead of a x d = b x c.

Ratio & proportion
| Common multiplier | a:b = ka:kb, so write as ax and bx |
|---|---|
| Proportion | a:b = c:d means a x d = b x c |
| Mean proportional of a and b | root(a x b) |
| Third proportional to a, b | b^2 / a |
Partnership
| Profit share | in ratio of (capital x time) for each partner |
|---|---|
| Equal time | profit divides simply in the ratio of capitals |
