Ratio, Proportion & Partnership

AreaArithmetic DifficultyEasy–Moderate SSC weightage3–5 questions

A ratio compares two quantities of the same kind; a proportion says two ratios are equal. The single most useful idea is the common multiplier: if a:b = 3:4, write the quantities as 3x and 4x, and one equation fixes x. Partnership is just ratio applied to money and time — profit divides in the ratio of (capital x months). This chapter builds the multiplier habit that also powers mixtures, ages and partnership.

⚡ SSC shortcuts & speed methods

The fastest ways to crack this chapter under time pressure — the techniques that separate a 95+ percentiler from the rest.

  • Always introduce a common multiplier x and form one equation.
  • Combine a:b and b:c by scaling b to its LCM.
  • Partnership: reduce each partner to capital x months, then share in that ratio.
  • Same time invested -> profit splits in the ratio of capitals.

⚠️ Common mistakes & traps

SSC is designed so that careless errors here cost you marks. Internalise each trap before the exam.

  • Adding ratio terms without multiplying by x first.
  • Forgetting to scale the common term when chaining a:b and b:c.
  • Using capital only (ignoring time) in partnership profit sharing.
  • Treating a:b = c:d as a + d = b + c instead of a x d = b x c.

📈 SSC exam insight & PYQ analysis

SSC favours add-to-each ratio sums and capital x time partnership. Coins-in-a-bag and income-expenditure-savings problems recur in Tier 2.

📌 Quick revision

Use a common multiplier for every ratio sum, equate cross-products for proportion, and remember mean proportional = root(ab). Partnership profit splits as capital x time. These habits also drive mixtures, ages and DI.
