Trigonometry & Heights / Distances

AreaTrigonometry DifficultyModerate–Hard SSC weightage4–6 questions (Tier 2)

Trigonometry in SSC rests on three pillars: the ratios (sin, cos, tan and their reciprocals), the standard-angle table (0, 30, 45, 60, 90), and the identities. Memorise the table cold and most direct questions are instant evaluations. The identities sin^2 + cos^2 = 1, 1 + tan^2 = sec^2 and 1 + cot^2 = cosec^2 simplify the rest. Heights and distances then apply tan to a right triangle: tan(angle) = opposite/adjacent.

Topics

⚡ SSC shortcuts & speed methods

The fastest ways to crack this chapter under time pressure — the techniques that separate a 95+ percentiler from the rest.

  • Reconstruct a triangle from one ratio using Pythagorean triples (3-4-5, 5-12-13, 8-15-17).
  • sec^2 - tan^2 = 1 and cosec^2 - cot^2 = 1 collapse long expressions.
  • Memorise the 0/30/45/60/90 table cold.
  • Heights & distances: tan(angle) = height / ground distance.

⚠️ Common mistakes & traps

SSC is designed so that careless errors here cost you marks. Internalise each trap before the exam.

  • Swapping sin and cos values in the standard table.
  • Forgetting tan 90 (and sec 90) are undefined.
  • Using sin instead of tan in elevation problems (tan = height/distance).
  • Dropping the square in sin^2 + cos^2 = 1.

📈 SSC exam insight & PYQ analysis

SSC Tier 2 asks direct standard-angle evaluations, identity simplifications, and single/double-observation height-and-distance problems at 30/45/60.

📌 Quick revision

Know the ratios, the standard-angle table and the three Pythagorean identities by heart. Reconstruct triangles from a single ratio, simplify with the identities, and solve heights/distances with tan(angle) = height/distance.
