Weight and Capacity Conversions (kg, g, L, mL)

Weight (Mass):
1 kilogram (kg) = 1,000 grams (g)

Capacity:
1 litre (L) = 1,000 millilitres (mL)

Both use the same conversion factor: x 1,000 for the larger-to-smaller direction.

In Indian context: a bag of sugar = 1 kg = 1,000 g. A large water bottle = 1 L = 1,000 mL.

Weight and Capacity ConversionsWEIGHT1 kg = 1,000 gkg to g: x 1,000g to kg: / 1,000CAPACITY1 L = 1,000 mLL to mL: x 1,000mL to L: / 1,000
1
Worked Example
Convert 8 kg to grams.
Solution1 kg = 1,000 g. 8 kg = 8 x 1,000 = 8,000 g.
2
Worked Example
Riya bought 2 kg of apples and 500 g of grapes. Total weight in grams?
Solution2 kg = 2,000 g. Total = 2,000 + 500 = 2,500 g.
3
Worked Example
A bottle has 1 L 200 mL of juice. Riya drinks 450 mL. How much is left?
SolutionTotal = 1 L 200 mL = 1,200 mL. Left = 1,200 - 450 = 750 mL.

Key Points

  • 1 kg = 1,000 g; 1 L = 1,000 mL — both use x 1,000
  • To convert kg to g: multiply by 1,000
  • To convert mL to L: divide by 1,000
  • Mixed measurements: first convert to the smaller unit, then add
