Assessment FOR vs OF vs AS Learning

First fix the four words CTET deliberately blurs. A test is a single tool or instrument (a worksheet, an oral quiz). Measurement assigns a number to performance (Riya scored 18 out of 25) -- it is quantitative and value-free. Evaluation goes further: it makes a value judgement about that performance against a goal (18/25 means Riya has grasped fractions but needs work on division). Assessment is the broad, ongoing process of gathering evidence about learning. Now the three purposes. Assessment FOR learning is formative -- it happens during teaching, is diagnostic, and its whole point is to give feedback that improves the next step of learning (a teacher reviewing classwork and re-teaching a confusing point). Assessment OF learning is summative -- it happens at the end of a unit or year and judges or certifies what has been achieved (the final exam, board result). Assessment AS learning is self-assessment -- the child reflects on and monitors their own learning, becoming an independent, metacognitive learner. The memory hook: FOR improves, OF proves, AS empowers.

✅ Solved examples

1. A teacher gives short quizzes during a unit, looks at the wrong answers, and re-teaches the topics students struggled with. This is best described as:
Assessment FOR learning (formative). It is ongoing, diagnostic and used to improve teaching and learning, not to award a final grade.
2. The year-end board examination that certifies a student has passed Class 10 is an example of:
Assessment OF learning (summative). It comes at the end and judges or certifies overall achievement.
3. A student uses a checklist to review her own essay and decides what to improve before submitting it. This illustrates:
Assessment AS learning -- self-assessment, where the learner monitors and regulates her own learning (metacognition).
4. A child scores 30 out of 40 on a spelling test. Assigning that score of 30 is an act of:
Measurement -- it simply assigns a number to performance. Judging what the 30 means for the child would be evaluation.
