Active/Passive & Narration • Topic 4 of 4
Reported Questions & Commands
Reporting questions: use 'asked' and turn the question into statement order (no inversion, no question mark). Yes/no questions add 'if/whether'; wh-questions keep the wh-word. Commands/requests use 'told/requested' + to-infinitive.
Questions and commands have their own rules
| Type | How to report |
|---|---|
| Yes/no question | asked + if/whether + statement order |
| Wh- question | asked + wh-word + statement order |
| Command | told / ordered + to + base verb |
| Request | requested + to + base verb |
| Negative command | not to + base verb |
Drop the inversion. "He said, 'Where do you live?'" → "He asked where I lived" (statement order, no "do", no "?"). Commands lose the imperative: "Open the door" → "told me to open the door".
