Fill in the Blanks

AreaGrammar & Usage DifficultyEasy–Moderate SSC weightage2–4 questions (Tier 1)

Fill-in-the-blank questions test either vocabulary (which word fits the meaning) or grammar (which form fits the structure). The method is the same: read the whole sentence for context, decide what the blank needs (a noun? a positive word? a preposition?), then test each option in place. For double blanks, the correct option must make both blanks work.

Topics

⚡ SSC shortcuts & speed methods

The fastest ways to crack this chapter under time pressure — the techniques that separate a 95+ percentiler from the rest.

  • Read the whole sentence for context before looking at options.
  • Decide what the blank needs (part of speech, positive/negative, tense).
  • Use collocations (heavy rain, strong coffee) and fixed prepositions.
  • Double blanks: the pair must fit BOTH gaps — eliminate on either.
  • Test each option in place and read it mentally.

⚠️ Common mistakes & traps

SSC is designed so that careless errors here cost you marks. Internalise each trap before the exam.

  • Choosing a word of the right meaning but wrong collocation.
  • Ignoring time markers when a grammar form is needed.
  • Accepting a double-blank pair where only one word fits.
  • a/an by spelling instead of sound.

📈 SSC exam insight & PYQ analysis

SSC fill-in-the-blank items split between vocabulary fit and grammar form, with a few preposition/article gaps. Context-first reading plus the "both blanks" rule for doubles handles them efficiently.

📌 Quick revision

Fill-in-the-blanks is context-driven choice: read the sentence, decide what the gap needs (meaning, form or preposition), and test each option in place. Use collocations and fixed prepositions, mind time markers for grammar gaps, and for double blanks accept only the pair that fits both.
