Reading Comprehension

AreaComprehension & Writing DifficultyModerate SSC weightage5–8 questions (Tier 1, usually one passage)

Reading comprehension gives a passage and several questions on it. Unlike vocabulary or grammar, the answers are all in front of you — the skill is locating and interpreting them under time pressure. The reliable method: skim the passage for its gist, read the questions, then scan back for the specific lines that answer each one. Crucially, answer from the passage, not your own knowledge or opinion.

⚡ SSC shortcuts & speed methods

The fastest ways to crack this chapter under time pressure — the techniques that separate a 95+ percentiler from the rest.

  • Skim for the gist, read the questions, then scan back for specifics.
  • Answer ONLY from the passage — never from outside knowledge or opinion.
  • Main idea covers the whole passage (not too broad, not too narrow).
  • Inference = small supported step; tone = author's word choices.
  • For vocabulary-in-context, substitute each option into the sentence.

⚠️ Common mistakes & traps

SSC is designed so that careless errors here cost you marks. Internalise each trap before the exam.

  • Answering from general knowledge instead of the passage.
  • Choosing a detail that is true in life but not stated.
  • Picking a too-broad or too-narrow main idea/title.
  • Over-inferring beyond what the text supports.

📈 SSC exam insight & PYQ analysis

SSC usually sets one passage with 4–5 questions mixing main idea, inference, vocabulary-in-context and detail. Skim-then-scan and "answer from the text" are the whole technique.

📌 Quick revision

Reading comprehension is locating and interpreting, not recalling. Skim for the gist, read the questions, scan back for the exact lines, and answer strictly from the passage. Match main-idea options to the whole passage, keep inferences well-supported, and read words in their passage context.
