Translating Words to Algebra

Translation is a word-by-word conversion. A handful of keywords map to operations: "is" means equals, "of" (with a fraction or percent) means multiply, "sum"/"more than"/"increased by" mean add, "difference"/"less than"/"fewer than" mean subtract, and "per"/"for each" signal division or a rate. The one phrase that trips everyone is "less than": "5 less than x" is x − 5, not 5 − x — the order flips. Start by writing "let x = …" for the unknown you want, express every other quantity in terms of it, then turn the sentence's main "is/equals" into an equals sign. Read the final question again before answering: a problem may make you solve for x but ask for 2x + 1. On the GRE, when the numbers are answer choices, it is often faster to plug a choice back into the words and check than to solve the equation forward — the choices are a resource, not just an endpoint.

✅ Solved examples

1. Translate and solve: "7 more than twice a number is 23."
Let the number be x. "Twice a number" = 2x; "7 more than" it = 2x + 7; "is 23" gives 2x + 7 = 23. Then 2x = 16, x = 8.
2. Translate: "5 less than three times a number equals the number increased by 7." Find the number.
Let x be the number: 3x − 5 = x + 7. So 2x = 12, x = 6. (Note "5 less than 3x" is 3x − 5, not 5 − 3x.)
3. A number is 40% of 150. What is the number?
"Of" means multiply: 0.40 × 150 = 60.
4. The sum of a number and its double is 27. Find the number.
Let the number be x. x + 2x = 27, so 3x = 27 and x = 9.

✏️ Practice — try these, take hints as needed

1. "4 more than half a number is 19." Find the number.
Half a number = x/2.
x/2 + 4 = 19.
x/2 = 15.
30
2. "8 less than a number is 12." Find the number.
"8 less than x" = x − 8.
x − 8 = 12.
Add 8.
20
3. Three times a number, decreased by 4, equals 20. Find the number.
3x − 4 = 20.
3x = 24.
Divide.
8
4. A number increased by 25% of itself equals 75. Find the number.
x + 0.25x = 75.
1.25x = 75.
Divide by 1.25.
60
5. The sum of a number and 12 is three times the number. Find it.
x + 12 = 3x.
12 = 2x.
Solve.
