Compare Area of Two Shapes

To compare areas:

  1. Calculate each shape's area using Length x Width (or count squares)
  2. Compare the numbers
  3. Larger area = more space inside

Which has larger area: a 3x5 rectangle or a 4x4 square?
SolutionRectangle: 3x5=15 cm². Square: 4x4=16 cm². 16 > 15, so the square has larger area.

Compare shapes: one 2x6 (12 cm²), another 3x5 (15 cm²).
Solution3x5=15 cm² > 2x6=12 cm². The 3x5 shape has larger area.

Two shapes both have area 24 cm². Can they look different?
SolutionYes! A 4x6 rectangle and a 3x8 rectangle both have area 24 cm² but look completely different.
