Line Plots with Fractional Units

A line plot is a graph that shows data points along a number line. Each X represents one data value.

Fractional line plots use number lines with fractions (like 0, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1).

To read: count the X marks above each value.

Worked Example
Plot: 2 1/4, 2 1/2, 2 1/4, 2 3/4. How many X marks at 2 1/4?
Solution2 leaves were 2 1/4 inches. 2 X marks at 2 1/4.

Worked Example
Which fractional length appears most?
SolutionThe value with the most X marks above it is the mode (most common value).
3
Worked Example
How many measurements are above 1 1/2?
SolutionCount all X marks to the right of 1 1/2 on the number line.

Key Points

  • Each X on a line plot = one data point.
  • Count X marks above a value to find its frequency.
  • The value with the most X marks is the mode.
